Default 123 10th Ave SW, or better known as Bromley Square

Quoting the 3 posts from http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...t=never+ending

Holy crap, yes Bromley Square aka 'Calgary's highrise Ghetto' deserves its own thread.

Who here has lived there and/or visited someone who lives there?

I lived there from 2002 - 2006 in good'ol 3204 (penthouse baby ). I was 21-25 years old during that phase, so needless to say there were quite some memorable times. Listed (in no particular order) are some of my most notable memories:

-Seeing that view for the very first time.. I was quick to sign the lease and pay the security deposit after that!

-The umpteen times the water (hot or complete) was turned off. Showed up at work a couple times with devilish hair after mistakingly sleeping till 9:01am.

-Dropping 4 floors what felt uncontrollably in the east glass elevator. That elevator was shut down for 4 or so months after that.

-getting stuck in the elevators numerous times (all 4 of them).

-waiting eons some days for an elevator to come up to my floor. I remember walking down 32 floors of stairs some mornings because that was faster.

-unfortunate experience of watching some dude from 2901 leap to his death last summer. A massive black cloud and raging hailstorm enveloped the downtown core soon after. It was very eerie and left me pretty shaken for awhile. I had to under the instruction from the authorities go down to explain what I saw to the investigator. When I got down there, there was no ambulance, police or anything yet. I saw a woman with a stroller and child walking towards the scene, knowing what they were about to see, I ran across the 'mess' to stop them.

*Sorry about the gore. Not something I would want anyone else to have to see.

-Sketchy folk always surrounding the building and in front of the macs/pizza 555/liquor store. Seeing that line-up every day at the Mustard Seed was always a sobering sight.

-That god awful smell behind the macs in the alley.

-The trains... oh boy do I not miss those trains! Listening to those beasts brake for 5-10mins on a Sunday morning was never fun. I have to admit though, I was a fan of toy trains when I was a kid and it was kind of neat seeing the 150 or so cars in a row (especially when they were all full of lime yellow sulphur!)

-Making sure guests didn't throw shyte off the balcony was occaisionally a challenge.

-The 'gym'... lol.

Wasn't all bad..

-Being mere blocks from the Ctrain, 17th Ave SW, 4th St SW and cool hangouts like the Hop'n'Brew, Drum & Monkey, Bottlescrew Bills (finished my passport!) and being able to walk to/from the 'Dome was a huge bonus!

-I was occaisionally mocked for living across the street from Calgary's gay strip on 10th ave and 1st St SW. Good hot dog stand in front of boystown though

-The view, I loved the city view and my neighboors across the hallway had a sweet view of the Rockies on a clear day. The storms are quite a site to see from up there too. We would go up on to the roof to watch the Stampede fireworks which was always a blast. Definate vantage point.

Kind of interesting to note too that when I first moved in there, the rent was $775/month for the 2 bedroom 800 sq ft apartment. Now, my former room mate who is still living there is paying $1517/month. But I guess that's the way it is in Cowtown these days.

So yeah, a lot of good, a lot of bad. All in all a very character building phase of my life!

A few years ago, I had a friend that lived up on 25. One night after a hard night drinking at Manhattens, I staggered to his balcony and puked all over the edge. The splatter on the parking lot belowe was very impressive.

I myself did not live in Bromley but had a close friend years ago that lived there. It was a perfect place to stumble home from The Palace (which for some reason we frequented).

The train sounds were great - particulalry the big crashing sounds that would happen from time to time.

But no thread about Bromley is complete without making note of Michael's Pizza which was a regular haunt of ours for many years.

Quick Bromley Square trivia - there was an old MS clip art collection that included a skyline of cities including Calgary. Among the few distinguishable buildings in the clip art were the Calgary Tower, Saddledome and yes - Bromley Square.

Ahhh,so you puked on the South side, nice. Definately not the only vomit on that side of the building! Once my friend did the deed over my balcony, but he mananged some how to get most of it onto 3104's railing. As it was disgustingly obvious where it came from, I glad buddy didn't come home for a couple weeks and it had rained a lot before he did....

Ah yes, forgot about Michael's and that ever so wonderfully artery clogging pizza. A lot of good Flames memorabilia on those walls too. And yes, Bromley existed before Petro Can Centre, Bankers Hall, and many more. Definate Scotsman Hill view staple!

More Bromley Trivia!

The owner of Michael's Pizza has numerous closeups on the Flames '89 Stanley Cup Video produced by 2&7.

Big Flames fan that guy!

I knew a couple of girls who lived there. We used to drink at their place and then go to (this may take some people back) The Ranchmans, and then later Ahhs. Electric Avenue, when it was happening, was up the street also.

I can't imagine seeing somebody plummet to their death. That would mess me up forever. I hope you're OK with it now.

I used to live there 200-2003ish. We used to have huge parties and spread peanut butter on the main door to bromely. Them watch the ensuing carnage on the security camera's. I finished two passports at bottlescrew bills and got trapped in the elevators numerous times. Great times, what a dive!

So that was YOU!

Yeah, the front door camera was always a fun channel to watch at almost anytime, especially during peanut butter escapades.

Was it a couple years ago where they didn't change the locks after someone moved out - a girl moved in and the previous tenant returned to rape her?

The awesome blue and yellow text awnings they put up made that place look cheaper... if that's somehow possible. Wasn't there a methadone clinic above what is now Sushi Sen at one point?

I don't miss walking by that place....

Yeah, it freaked me out for quite awhile. I can't even begin to think how much more messed up I would have been had I known the guy. Still crosses my mind every now and then, but it doesn't bother me anymore like it used to.

Wow, I can't get over how much Bromley Square sounds like Fenwick Towers in Halifax the tallest building East of Montreal (a Dalhousie residence no less). An eye sore that has basically everything mentioned here, down to the people jumping to their death (they have chichen wire up covering the balconies so people don't jump anymore).

However on a more positive note the Peanut Butter idea is beyond hilarious

I watched a doc the other night called The Bridge. Basically the guy filmed the Golden Gate Bridge for an entire year - now apparently this is the site of more suicides than anywhere else in the world. Anyhoo he caught about 20 people jumping to their deaths and the documentary is an examination of suicide with interviews with the various families.

But even seeing someone jump to their death on video was very hard to watch. Seeing it person? Yikes.

really re: your last part? I didn't realize that, Maritime. I heard it was because of all the birds that would fly in. There are birds sitting on the balcony ledges/fencing all the time. (and its definately not chicken wire there, its full fledge metal fence stuff - whatever you call that. name escapes me at the momment).

yeah I forget what the stuff actually is, I generally don't trust the balcony enough to properly inspect.

But yes it's true, that's why the fence stuff is up. Otherwise why wouldn't other buildings have it, and why not just use regular lower-cost light weight chicken wire?

However I am surprised that nothing about it is on wikipedia, mind you if it was rumour I'm certain it would have been listed under that section

The number of people that smelt their hands after realizing what just happened was shocking. A few times the whole apartment was laughing so hard we were in tears.
