Who here wants to compete in the Olympics?
Hey guys, I have a plan for anyone interested to go to the Olympics--as a competitor.
We (i.e. interested Calgarypuckers) pick some random useless sport--I say handball--learn the rules, play a few games, by which time we would probably be the top team in Canada. Then go to some international tourneys as Team Canada, qualify for the Olympics, and Bob's your uncle (Jordon, that's for you) we are Olympians.
Sure we would get our asses handed to us by Sweden or Germany, but the key point is that we get into the Olympic village parties (can you say foreign sporty chicks and doping? Hells yeah). Who's in for the Calgarypuck handball team?
Calgary Flames-o'-the-Floor handball lineup:
icarus
Scrambler
ricoFlame
Jiggy_12
kipperfan
JBR the pirate
octothorp
Caged Greats (sucker in net)
Rather Dashing
Firefly (until she finalises the women's squad)
ParaNoia

Really? Where did you play it? You can be our coach and star player. What do we have to do?

I played this in highschool gym a few years ago, and found great success. Now, I wouldn't say I'm anything close to an expert, but how hard can these 'olympics' be to make?
Handball is like a combo between soccer, basketball, and hockey. All you really need is good hand-eye coordination, and a decent ability to throw and catch a ball.

Sure, I'm in. I was really good at it in high school too, back about a decade ago. I was always annoyed that there was an organized school competitive league for volleyball (which I sucked at), and yet none for handball.

Isn't there some less athletic sport we could compete in? Curling is out because there are good Canadian teams... but there has to be a more wimpy sport than handball. Where's the list of sports?

here's the list of sports: http://www.olympic.org/uk/sports/index_uk.asp
not too sure you pretty much have to be an elite athlete for all of them.

they have a list of competition sports, they all look pretty athletic...
but if you look at the "RECOGNISED SPORTS"..some looks not very athletic at all
and i am sure we can represent in some of those areas too...(in a way?)

Wasn't there that guy from Calgary who basically said "I'm going to win a medal no matter what" who had never done any Olympic sports. Then won a gold in the Skeleton or whatever?
I think the key is to jump on board with a new event. What are the new ones being introduced?

I'm actually not too shabby at this sport either, got the opportunity to play it whilst in 'Gymnasium' (High School) in Sweden. I think we could be putting a pretty good team together here...

I had the idea way back in University in 1996 to be a ski jumper, since we weren't sending a team in Nagano and the team was in disarray (I assumed) as a result.
Facilities right in town (I know, another thread) would be easy to train, although you'd have to make the minimum IOC/FIS requirement (assumebly raised after Eddie the Eagle in 1988), you make whatever Top 100 in the world, and then go to Nagano for a week/ten days, finish 85th, and party your face off.
Never got past that stage...
