NFL vs. CFL
Don't know if this has been discussed here before. I know since I've been here (a whole 5 months) that I've yet to see a thread dedicated to it. Just wondering which league everyone is looking forward to the most. Let's not turn this into a flame war. Personally I'm way more of an NFL fan but I do enjoy both leagues.
I think a big part of it is the fact that NFL fans get way more into it than CFL fans. Makes the close games that much more exciting. That and I believe that NFL does have the best players and the best rules. I hate our "No Yards" rule.

Haven't paid attention to the CFL in years. The NFL has the better athletes, and I have to say the 1 point for the missed field goal thing drives me nuts. the CFL most definitely has great fans, though. I think they get into it just as much as their southern counterparts.

I used to be a HUGE CFL fan, but now I would term myself a casual fan. The CFL's forray into the US coupled with other factors (ongoing bush league officiating, lack of leadership from the league that allows trades like last season's Edmonton/Hamilton dealings, and clown acts like the Renegades) turned me off of it. I enjoy the games I watch but I have a hard time taking it seriously.

That's a really good point. The CFL has some major credibility issues. One of the other big problems I have with it is that I think it tries too hard not to be the NFL sometimes. I still can't believe that you only need to have one foot inbounds on a catch for it to be considered complete. Just seems really Mickey Mouse at times.

The CFL does not come close to the NFL, taking everything in to account the NFL is the best run Pro sports league in the world
that all being said

CFL overtimes are rather entertaining but everything else about it seems really bush league, and I always have a hard time 'accepting' the CFL rules when I feel the NFL has it nailed solid.

CFL is definitely bush and if there was any way to trade the Stampeders for an NFL franchise, I'd be on it like a fat kid on a smartie. The NFL seems a lot more like an important event and they actually keep their best and brightest.
But since the CFL is best we have right now, I still watch it and support it.

I would kill to have an NFL team here. That being said, there's no way we'd have the market for it.

broke the first rule

those that know me know me as a CFL guy.
I grew up watching the CFL, have an attachment to my hometown team which makes it exciting. I couldn't care less what happens in Jacksonville or Cleveland. NFL is too low scoring for me, and too slow (40 second play clock, 3 timeouts, 4 downs etc). I do admire the athletes & will watch the last few minutes of a close game, but a full game will probably put me to sleep.
I like how the CFL is more wide-open game, higher scoring, pass-happy, seems to have more 'big plays'. I can see the 'bush league' argument...I think it's making some strides with the recent SMS & the introduction of instant replay.
That's my perspective...no one's really going to change it for me

I don't mind that. US College uses the same criteria as the CFL, and it seems that the second fott is the one that almost always leads to a challenge and 3 more minutes of waiting. I really like both, but I kind of like that NFL is Sunday, and one game Monday night. Its made for poolies like me.
In the NFL, I hate touchbacks - they're worse than no yards. And the extra point is, I think, a great rule. Give a team an incentive to try and carry the ball out of the endzone.
And as per the late, great John Candy:
Quote:
Contrary to popular belief, Canadian footbal actually has four downs, not three - but we always punt on the third down just to be safe.

Meh...too much passing in CFL for me and there's no skill at defense. But I respect your opinion.

I think you might have point on kickoffs with touchbacks, but not on punts. Plus, what's to stop a team from just hiring a kicker to drive the ball out of the endzone on every kickoff.
EDIT: On another note, can I persuade the mods to put up a poll?

NFL - better athletes and a better style of football if you ask me, so for general games I pick the NFL. I also can't stand the singles in CFL.
CFL - has the home team...and nothing can ever replace that.
I like to consider myself a fan of the NFL and the Calgary Stampeders (although I have also attended non-Stamps games in BC and Edmonton).

Too much running in the NFL for me. First down rush, gain of 3, second down rush, gain of 3, third down rush, gain of 4, first down rush...etc.. zzzzz
There are better athletes in the NFL, but the rules actually stifle how they show their athleticism.

Indeed. In fact I recently attended my first NFL game last year - a week 11 (or 12) divisional game with huge implications between Pittsburgh and Cincy.
After hearing so much about the great NFL fans and Stillers fans in particular, I thought I was in for something special. Nope.
For the most part the fans in Pitt. were just like the fans at Stamps games: they matched CFL fans in per person noise, and significant numbers of fans poured out of the stadium beggining with 9 minutes left in a two score ballgame (for the division). At the exodus, I was truly shocked.

See I think this what separates the casual football fans from the hardcore football fans. If I see an NFL team picking up a first down on 3 straight runs it either means they are blocking really well or the defense is not getting the job done. Either way I still find it fascinating, but I'm also a huge football nerd.

Can the pole have three choices:
NFL
CFL
Calgary Stampeders

I'm going to be completely honest, I'd be more stoked if my Eagles won the SB than if the Stamps win the Grey Cup. And that comes from someone who used to have family playing for the Stamps.

I'm not a huge fan of either Canadian or American Football. I do watch the Grey Cup and the Superbowl every year but that's about as interested as I am in this sport.

I like the NFL better. I hate all the kicking in a CFL game and thats because of the 3 downs. the 1 point for a missed field goal drives me nuts, i hate it. I do however like the CFL version of OT compared to sudden death style of the NFL.
