Wait, so in the Sun today, they state that the daughter was missing... and this article doesn't mention a daughter at all, but says "a young girl in Grade 7 lived with the family, who had moved to Medicine Hat from Ottawa".
They say they can't release her name... but if this is the same girl, then they did already...

They said on the news last night that the girl was missing, but they were not issuing an Amber Alert.
I was wondering why at the time, but now it makes sense.

So far, the cops haven't released the name of the 12 year old girl. The Young Offenders Act protects her identity. The cops or media can't even identify the dead family members because that could identify the girl.
Assuming it's the daughter.
The cops can release her name before she's been arrested ... when she is a suspect or a person of interest. As soon as she's taken into custody, the YOA prevents the release of her name.
Of course, we all connect the dots and assume this is the family's daughter. Her 23-year old boyfriend is co-accused. It doesn't take a huge leap to figure out what probably happened here. Of course it's just speculation.
This case illustrates the vast difference between how cops in Canada and the U.S. deal with these kind of cases. If this would have happened in the States, her name would already be out in public. We'd know about the link between her and the guy. And the cops would be talking about the probable motive behind this murder.
Instead, we're left to 'presume' that her parents probably flipped out when they learned their pre-teen daughter was dating a 23 year old man. (I have a 14 year old daughter, and I'd probably strangle the guy). Perhaps there was a threat of legal action against the boyfriend. The daughter and boyfriend then plotted and acted to kill her parents so they could continue their misunderstood relationship. Of course it's just a theory.
In the end, a 12 year old girl in Canada that whacks her parents will be out on the street when she is still just a young woman. The boyfriend can look forward to his 50-th birthday in prison by the time this works it's way through court.

I beleive they can, if you are under 12 then you can get away with murder. That's if I remember my Law class from a few weeks ago.

The daughter's picture (a school photo) was on several news websites yesterday, but has been removed, along with her name. A normal, nice looking young girl.
If this is shaping up to be what it appears, expect her 23 year old boyfriend to go away for long time but the daughter to get very little time, even if she was intricately involved.
I lived in Medicine Hat for 18 years, and then returned in summers when off from school for another 6 years. Murders don't happen too often there, but when they do, they're doozies.
This most recent one is just around the corner from my parents' house.
Anyone remember the Koroluk (sp?) murder in Medicine Hat about 1993? Basically, 3 high school students killed one of their mothers in a bid to get some insurance money. Some very grisly facts about the method of the killing and the manner in which they tried to dispose of the body came out during the proceedings. As I recall, the 3 kids couldn't afford gas money to go very far so had to dump the body in plain view in a ditch just outside the city. And after the crime, they attended a high school party and told some "friends" what they had done. One of them was arrested while sitting in a high school class the Monday morning after the murder (and coincidentally while sitting next to my brother).
I think the son served 3 years, the main "culprit" about 7 and the other friend just a year or 2. Tragic all around, and no where near the amount of time they should have had to serve.

I saw the Headlines in the paper yesterday (don't remember if it was the sun or herald) but it said something like: Missing girl family killed...
I was wondering what was going on... I do believe it to be the girl missing that moved from Ottawa to Medicine Hat

A 12-year-old girl and her 23-year-old boyfriend are charged with the horrific murder of her family.
Friends of the Grade 7 girl said she had recently turned into a "goth" after meeting the 23-year-old on the Internet at a site dedicated to goth and vampire lifestyles.
The Sun has chosen not to identify the site.
Friends say her family was furious at her relationship with a much older man. Several neighbours said loud fighting was heard coming from the home in recent weeks.

The 12 year old should be punished, no question. But is a 12 year old beyond redemption?

The 23 year old will go down harshly. I hope they do tests on the girl to see if the two had sex and then charge him with rape as well. WTF are you doing messing with a 12 year old?!
While the girl needs to be incarcerated, she's going to have a long, tough road ahead knowing she's responsible for the deaths of her family, especially her brother who would have had nothing to do with her parent's decision about her relationship with the guy.

This whole thing is crazy. I grew up in Medicine Hat (only about 10 blocks from where this happened apparently) and I guess I went to the same jr. High school as this girl. I probably know some of her teachers. That is just freaking crazy.
and WTF is a 23 year old dude doing dating a 12 year old? Man this whole thing is messed up beyond belief.

OK, I'm confused. Is it the daughter that is implicated? I was under the impression that it was 2 different girls involved; the daughter is 13 and then this 12 year old girl.
Is it 2 different people?

The Herald this morning IDs the site as vampirefreaks.com, a site that caters to "gothic industrial culture," and claims to have over 500,000 members. Entries include macabre descriptions of being raped - "I liked it" - wanting to commit suicide, and desires to kill others......... Nice.

I think they are the same girl, but you are right about the different ages. However, looking ay yesterday's news the name of the family was published, but as of today a 12 year old girl is arrested and the family can not be named. I'd say they were the same girl.

This goth website reminds me of that old SNL skit with Chris Kattan as the "Prince of Darkness" living in his parents basement (aka "The chamber of soooouuuullllssss")...funny but apparently true...
The rest of this whole fiasco is just downright disgusting.
