Yee-haw! I know of a lot of people who went through all sorts of hoops to get a grey system, and now it looks like it was all for nothing.

Now I have to figure out if I still want to switch to XM or not.

Man, I certainly respect those that like this guy, but I sure dont understand it.

His schtick of bimbos showing up in studio and playing really silly, invented games naked is old and tiring. He isnt funny. He has no insight on much of anything but himself.

Will never ever understand the fascination with one of the worst broadcasters I have ever had the misfortune to listen too. Boring boring boring.

I agree 100% with you Tranny. But for those once a year times I would listen to him, I like having the choice.

Plus the whole satellite radio decision is the first time the CRTC has allowed any sort of competition from an American source; to give a classic example is Spike TV. While we are watching 3 hours of "Oblivios", Americans are watching a James Bond movie. We don't get to see it because CTV might decide to show that movie sometime in the next 4 years.

Those are 2 quite unrelated topics. I am guessing Spike can't show them because CTV owns the exclusive Canadian rights. That has very little to do with the CRTC, and is just based on the contracts that are signed.

The CRTC allows the distribution of pretty much every American produced TV program/movie/radio show that anyone in Canada would want to watch.

Actually what happened was several stations complained the last time Spike changed formats from The New TNN to Spike. Spike was able to keep it's Canadian license by promising not to air anything that anybody else here has.

My example was a stretch, but my point was that it's nice to see that Canadians are starting to be able to have the freedom to watch or listen to what we want; rather than what the CRTC thinks is best. When Satellite Radio was being considered, Sirius Canada said it would not be offering Stern initially. Now it is. And I'm glad a big company is deciding to stand up to the CRTC.

Why pay to listen to Howard Stern . . . . . when its free!!!

Sirius Satellite Radio Inc., which liberated radio shock jock Howard Stern from the federal decency standards that he felt had shackled him, is finding that freedom's just another word for $500 million to lose.

Since Jan. 9, when Stern debuted on Sirius, pirated versions of the shows have been made available for free via several online file-sharing networks just hours after Stern signs off. The New York-based broadcaster signed Stern to a five-year, half-billion-dollar contract in 2004.

In the US, the RIAA has requested that any digital device to record radio (or video, but they have only recently been connected) have the ability to read a broadcast flag. Their primary reason they state is they are afraid people can make perfect copies of any song played and won't buy the album.
However the public has gotten used to recording off of radio, and now expect to be able to do that, regardless of whether the source is digital or not.

I know when I was growing up most of my music was taped off am radio, until I got an after school job and disposable income.

Gee that's too bad. Didn't see that coming.

I think this Stern thing is going to be a pretty big flop for them. Wasn't half the appeal (at least) that he was always "pushing the envelope". Now there is no envelope. There is no risk involved. He's not a rebel anymore, he's just a guy who talks dirty. Hoo boy that sounds interesting. 500 million bucks for bad language and what must be real compelling interviews with porn stars. Good move.

Yeah I think Sirius put too many eggs in Stern's basket and the rest of the programming and radio tech development will suffer for a while.

XM Radio is the way to go long term.

I can't imagine paying for any radio content. But that's just me.

I had satellite radio in a rental car in Atlanta a few months ago and I can't say it was any more interesting than free radio in any normal, big city.

I'd pay for Sirius to listen to Stern alone. But the music stations are the clincher, great stuff.

What do we get here in Calgary for free?

CJAY - F'ing horrid
JACK - Ehh
CBC - Ok sometimes, pretty bland
QR - Not bad, but you can only take so much
FAN - Can't listen to this all day

Sirius wins. Asw soon as they make a truely portable unit and bring the price down, it will take over completely.

I wonder how many people need to "pay for Sirius to listen to Stern alone" to justify the $500 Million?

I'd like to get a satellite radio, but more because I'm a techie and love new hi-tech gadgets.

I wish I could rent each station for a month and see if I would stick with it, or if I would miss local news/weather/sports too much.

Cow, the variety and the fact it's commercial-free make it worth the money for me. I can't imagine being without satellite radio again.
I'm not a fan of Stern, I do however, really enjoy XM's Ron and Fez. Those guys are hilarious. I used to enjoy XM's Opie and Anthony but now they just dump on Stern all morning and it's gotten tiresome.

Anyone else get hooked up this weekend?

I bought the SV1 at Best Buy, cheapest unit there is. $47.98 CAD. The "home kits" they sell are complete horse****. I just cut the end off the cigarette lighter cord and attached a DC wall adapter. The "car" antenna works fine at home, no reason to buy the bigger "home" antenna.

I have incredible reception, I can carry the whole unit around my apartment including the antenna and it doen't even come close to cutting out. I threw it in my bag with a battery and listened while walking to work, no problems in the bus either. The only time it cut off was when the elevator doors closed going up the the 6th floor of my building.

The crazy thing is, my office does not have any windows, I'm in the middle of my building. Can't belive the antenna works just sitting on my desk.

Just to qualify this..... part of the reason it works so well for you is Calgary has a terrestrial repeater. Now, I have found wild fluctuations on how well this repeater works. I work downtown, and it works just find underground in my parking lot. However I often experience a drop out as I pass under the underpass at Deerfoot and McKenzie Blvd.

If you live in the deep suburbs, or out of town, your mileage will certainly vary.

I just noticed that, my Sat signal is at 0 and my Ter signal is at full strength. Do we just have the one repeater here in the city? How many watts is it pumping out? I'm assuming that it's located somewhere close to signal hill, by the CJAY station, yeah?

I'm guessing that's where the transmitter is as well. I don't know the wattage, but I also noticed that when I'm downtown I also get 0 for Sat signal, and full bars for terrestrial. By my house it goes to about 4 bars Terr and almost full on Sat.

I think the terrestrial signal overrides the satellite one.

I think we're just lucky with signal hill overlooking the whole city, I have a friend in LA who can barely get the Terrestial signal, it cuts in and out all over town.

I was looking at the MyFi2 on the weekend. So to use the unit stand alone, there is a portable antenna (the guy said you put it on your shoulder). Anyone know someone who has this unit? Can you get the terrestrial repeater without this antenna?
