not a fan of Torts by any means, but I have absolutely no problem with holding your players accountable. Even if you're a star or the captain - you don't play well enough, you'll sit. Not the worst message to send to your locker room.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Torts knows how to galvanize a room. And lose one. Its a risky game.

He has done it in his typical loser fashion though.
Hits the podium and I am not answering any questions. Sorry buddy that's your job if you can't answer any questions go back to TV.
Such a loser.

Mangiapane has 9 points in his last 12. Weird how much he has become the whipping boy even when he is producing.
The only message the team will get from benching him is WTF
Have no issue with what Torts is doing though - he hasn't publicly ripped his players.

His job is to coach. He can answer the media any way he wants.

Not the main part of the job though and not why coaches are hired

Charlie O'Connor does a great job covering the Flyers. From his podcast:
-Torts was the one pushing for Couturier to get the C. Torts was acting like the de facto C, but wanted a player to have one and be a vocal leader.
-Torts loves to galvanize the room. There could be the possibility that this backfires, but management is firmly behind him. Players know they can't force this coach out, at least not easily.
-He previously scratched Sanheim in Calgary, after Sanheim had bought tickets for all of his friends/family. Had loud arguments with Morgan Frost that lead to trade rumors. Since then, things have been patched up. Charlie is confident this will blow over as well.
-Charlie disagrees that Torts 'keeps his players accountable'. Torts picks his favourites. Laughton was playing terribly and never scratched or demoted. Brink and Foerster are both rookies, but only Brink gets sent down after making too many mistakes. Good insight.

This is what it looks like when a coach genuinely treats all players the same, regardless of stature, salary, or tenure.
I’m sure Torts does have favourites. But I expect those favourites are based on how hard they work. So a guy like Laughton isn’t getting the results, but I doubt he’s taking shifts off.

Brandon Dubinsky might not be a fan of Tortorella's tactics. Not sure though:

At first I thought, "Why would you comment on another team's situation? Shut up and play hockey". I didn't realize that he's been retired for quite some time now.

I don't understand the Mangiapane narrative this year. The fanbase has decided he is bad or underperforming. No he is not. Sorry he doesn't have 35 goals, he was never going to do that again. He's still a very reliable defensive minded possession forward who is good for 40 some points.

When Sutter favoured a guy like Lewis for the same thing, he was scorched here.

Couturier has had some really bad analytics this year but I'm sure his on ice sv% of .806 is not doing him any favours.

Yup. I think it'll work out for the Flyers in the short term, as always with Torts moves. Most of what he does in years 1-3 work, it's the years after where players are completely done with him.

Torts has a wrongfully given Cup which he won in his 4th full season as a coach. Since then, he's actually been pretty unsuccessful for a coach as well known as he is. Out of POs 6 times. Past round one only 3 times out pf the ten remaining seasons.

Outdated and overrated coach. Only gets in the headlines because of his antics.
Also seems to have some real anger management issues.
Not sure why the NHL continues to recycle coaches like this.
