Embarrassing Calgary herald article re: pot
http://calgaryherald.com/opinion/col...n-we-go-to-pot
This is literally the worst opinion piece I've read in years.
Some 'highlights' of the article
Quote:
Our first evidence came at a steak joint in Abbotsford. The waiter looked puzzled when I asked for steak sauce. He first brought mustard to the table, then ketchup. Our daughter, more familiar with such behaviour than her parents, stated, matter-of-factly, “the guy is stoned.”
The steak, ordered rare, was grey. I pointed this out to the waiter, who got the manager. “This steak is cooked just right,” the manager announced. He was stoned, too.

He must be stoned as well..
I don't even understand what his point is but his article can be summed up with "old man doesn't like marijuana, here are some anecdotal stories about someone who may or may not be high on marijuana".
Literally the worst article I've ever read.

I especially like the part where he transitions from pot use to heroin, fentynol and opioid issues without any attempt to connect the two.
He is right about the pot scenario in Van. Can walk into a shop with just ID and pick from a large selection of different strains and information on each one and the different effects of different types of products like hash and edibles.
It's delightful.

I thought it was hilarious.
He equates bad service at a restaurant with everyone being "stoned".
Not to pick on Calgary, but some of the worst customer service I ever had was in Calgary. I don't think I am saying anything crazy either as I have heard many people from Calgary say the same thing.
I recall one time ordering sushi to a hotel for delivery and when I got up to the room, I noticed half the order was missing. When I called to get the rest, their response was; "Too bad, we're too busy to make an extra trip. Come pick it up".
They must have been stoned!

Just remember, Barry Cooper is the leading "mind" behind the anti-climate change "Friends Of Science" non-profit.

I see Postmedia has fully integrated the Calgary Sun staff into the Herald.

To be fair it's an opinion piece.

The tragic thing is that Cooper gets academic brownie point publication credits for this rubbish.

Pure clickbait. And yet, by posting a thread on the article, you've now gotten hundreds of other people to read it, generating revenue for the Herald. Looks like Barry Cooper has done his job for the publication.

As soon as I saw in the title that he was referring to weed as "pot", I knew it was going to be an outdated, conservative "old guy" take.

Wow, that name rung a bell!
I remember having Barry Cooper as a professor in University. He's part of the "Calgary School" with Tom Flanagan - another prof who was Harper's mentor and campaign strategist.
In academic settings, they were well spoken, reasonable, good to debate with. Then you look at the books and papers they write and it's no wonder people associated Harper with that brand of dinosaur conservatism whether you agree with it or not.
I can totally see this type of article coming from him, even though I also have vivid memories of great group discussions about political history, the origins of totalitarianism, etc.
