taking the comments with a grain of salt...
seems the mood to spend public funding on these stadiums/arenas is at an all time low.
And as we've expressed, and someone in the comments did too, the timing couldn't be worse. People without jobs = even less likely to want to spend money.

I've mentioned that if we aren't opening a new rink by 2026 at the latest this franchise will probably be on the move.

Bettman is so oblivious, people are losing their jobs in Alberta by the hundreds to thousands, and he wants the public to buy a hockey team an arena?

It's fair to say that the economy is at a low right now. Employment rates are also extremely low, labour is cheap right now. This is an opportunity to give thousands of people jobs, and have lower construction cost. I'm not going to claim to be an expert on this sort of stuff, but creating jobs, and having lower construction prices, as well as cleaning up the environment, aren't all that bad.

And? This is the angle that irritates me the most as a fan. Its akin to fans saying "if we don't have a Stanley Cup by 2026 I'm not buying tickets." The citizens of the city aren't responsible to make sure a private business gets what it wants. If they want to build a new arena, I'm all for it. If they can raise money by adding a ticket surcharge or whatever, I'm all for that as well. But this kind of thing in the midst of a recession and global meltdown of the mainstay for peoples jobs here is asinine.

Bettman is doing his job. He works for the cartel and he is trying to apply outside pressure to the politicians to help the cartel member.
This likely is not the right thread, but we did not have a good discussion in the CalgaryNEXT threads on what actually is reasonable to expect of the City and the Province in order to preserve an NHL franchise locally. I don't like the extremes of "nothing, it's a private business for millionaires" vs. "whatever it takes". NHL franchises bring a lot of good with them to the communities they operate in, so there are definitely benefits in having them. How to evaluate the reasonable cost of supporting these benefits is a big question. I am not sure I can give a coherent and well-reasoned response to this question immediately.

When you go to some of the newer arenas around the league and then go back to the Saddledome, it is like night and day. It's like stepping into a time machine.
I'm not a Calgary resident so I tread lightly when it comes to the issue of spending public money, but in general, I'm not adverse to the idea. Having said that, the Flames have a very wealthy ownership group.
Also, when the Pens had Bettman petitioning Pittsburgh for a new arena, the end results were positive. It doesn't hurt to have him on your side.

Arena would be cheaper to build in the current economy...
if the arena project was to begin this would generate jobs..... (i.e. would be really good for the local economy).
IMO, City should request the Flames to award all contracts to local companies....
Bettman is basically stating the obvious...
As for the funds, that is a total separate debate.

I'm not against spending public money. Our city council wizards would just spend it on bike lanes anyway.
