2015-16 Flames Playoff Snake!
It's back!
Last year we assumed given the early pace that we would need at or near historical highs in points (96) to guarantee a playoff spot. This year seems the opposite, it very well might be that a team in the pacific makes it with a historically low number of points. Currently there are two teams, the Sharks and the Canucks that are in playoff positions at a pace of 85 and 82 points respectively.
As such, this year I'm going to say that 90 points is quite a safe bet in the Pacific to be in. Again, if they can get to that number I think they control their own destiny and don't need to worry too much about what other teams are doing. A much less stressful way to think about things.
So far the Flames, due to their very poor start are well below that pace, but of late have started to climb their way back.
6 wins in a row starting, or a record of 8-2 over their next ten gets them to that pace. It'll be a bit of a longer climb back, probably.

Can we please not. Can we stop bringing up Edmonton in every thread?

The flamesss ssnake returns!
So how long does this win streak need to be for the red snake to be doing bad stuff with the black snake?

I disagree. I think 3rd in the pacific will be at least around 92 points despite how bad it's looked.

Since the Colorado game on November 3rd, the Flames are 9-5-1 for a 104 point pace.
If they play at that pace the rest of the season, which is a very lofty goal, they would finish with 94/95 points, which is only marginally above the snake.
Despite closing the gap strong, they still have a ways to go.

I'd make the black snake 92 points. I don't think 90 is safe.
I base this purely on intuition.

Watch some more Canucks, Sharks, Coyotes and oilers games and you'll start to think 90 points is safe for home ice in the first round! 82 might be safe for the playoffs. This is a capital B Baaaad division this year.
Also, congrats on finally turning that autosig thing on your phone off!

38 points after 34 games would put them ahead of a 90 point pace. That means winning every game between now and the Christmas break.
They have 9 games until the end of the year. If they can get 15 points in those 9 games (7-1-1), they would start 2016 above a 90 point pace.

Okay, but why do you think that given the current pace of Vancouver and San Jose?

Edmonton.
If you've caught their games they're getting strong goaltending from Nilsson, Nurse has bolstered their defense from the top down by knocking everybody else down the rung, the Hall-Draisaitl line is one of the best in the NHL right now, and they'll get McDavid back next month. For all the talk of the Flames "turning it around", they've been pacing us for the same stretch and look to get back Pouliot, Yakupov, and McDavid which is an entire 2nd line.
Soon they'll have Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as their #3 center on a third line with a highly skilled winger in Eberle which is just unfair - no team has that much forward depth in the whole league. Their "filler" wingers are good players - Khaira, Purcell, and Pouliot. Their 4th line, while not a second 3rd line or anything, is a very solid energy line with guys like Hendricks, Lestestu, Korpikoski bringing the compete up a notch,
Their power play is also one of the most dangerous in the league which can keep them in games they've been otherwise outplayed.
Really though, it goes back to Hall and Draisaitl. They move the puck up through neutral ice in an instant for dangerous chances all night. It all starts with their defensive play, where that line is very rough to get good chances against. Draisaitl will be a #1 Center in the NHL if he's not already as he's one hell of a skater with a complete skillset and high IQ.
Don't be surprised if both the Oilers and Flames are in a dog fight for 3rd until the end of the season and maybe even 2nd as Anaheim is no lock.

Yeah, I don't see Vancouver, San Jose or Arizona as our main competition. They aren't terrible but I think Anaheim, Calgary and Edmonton will be the main competitors for the last two spots.
If we can win 60% of our remaining games we'll have 91 points which will put us close.

I really can't see the Oilers winning consistently down the stretch when everyone tightens up

It's a good thing the Flames snake went to the chiropractor on Nov. 4.

4 more in a row gets us above the snake at this point.
