Default Long Island - Jersey shore vacation

Heading to NY for annual summer trip and we are thinking of extending it past the city this year.

Looking for a beach-style getaway for a week with quaint restaurants, bike paths etc.

Any recommendations from CP travellers? Thanks, but I already have all the Sbarro's mapped out.

Don't know much about LI, but can pass on some info about the Jersey shore. Really depends on what kind of holiday you're looking for, some suggestions below. All of them have have boardwalks for biking (before a certain time like 10 or 11 am as it does get crowded in the summer)

I would recommend renting a beach house if there's a few of you, but you'll need to book ahead. Sites like VRBO can help, and any real estate company on the shore can help find rentals as well.

From North to South:

Atlantic city-- some good shows, okay casinos, but otherwise a bit run down, nothing to write home about. Probably least fits the quaint restaurant request.

Ocean City NJ- more family friendly, I believe the boardwalk is dry, again depends on your goals, lots of bikes and restaurants.

Wildwood- more of a party place, younger crowd etc

Cape May - Classic Beachside, a little more sophisticated. Good place for whale watching, Nature reserves etc, but you'll have to look into the season. Quaint.

there are others (Avalon etc) in between these places but I don't know them as well. You can google these to figure out if they're a good fit for the type of holiday you're looking for, and don't forget to consider that the weather can be a bit variable with clouds and rain not terribly often, but not uncommon.

In general, you want to get as far away from the city if you want to swim. In terms of Long Island, the closest one beach I'd swim at is Long Beach...although even then, a friend of mine once saw a pork chop floating by.

The beaches in the Hamptons are quite nice. When we're out visiting the family we usually go to Cupsogue Beach in West Hampton, as it has nice and sandy beaches, and used by mostly locals. Unfortunately the little snack hut there caught on fire last year, so Im not sure what the situation is now with that.

The North Shore of long island is really nice too, but a different experience. The water is much calmer as you're on the Long Island Sound instead of the ocean that the South Shore is on. Great place to go kayaking or paddle boarding. Generally, the North Shore is very picturesque and quaint...lots of trees and villages and little inlets.

If you don't mind going further, I'd recommend going out to Montauk or Shelter Island if you're looking for something a little more quiet. Really quaint places with great seafood and good times. The water is a little rougher in Montauk as it's right on the tip of the Island, but not too bad. But Montauk in general is one of my favourite places in Long Island.

The Jersey Shore is pretty much exactly what you think it is. However if you do go to Jersey, make sure to hit up a place called Stuff Yer Face for a stromboli.
