Flames Fan 590: Treliving on CHL prospects, 2015 draft, and trade deadline

Brad Treliving on Fan 590 February 25th
http://pmd.fan590.com/podcasts/junio...ruary-25th.mp3

Bennett:
  • thinks it is the best move to send him back to Junior for the Flames and Sam
Sam vs Sean:
  • excited to have both
  • can't have success without strength down the middle
  • Sean - is a big body, good on both sides of the puck, real cerebal type player, back to back 20 goal seaons at 20 years old
  • Sam - is more dynamic, a driver, creating and cutting into seams, a real competitive edge, plays a high pace
  • their games compliment each other
  • joked that there was a lot of screaming, yelling and high fiving when he told Gilmour that Sam was going back to Kingston
  • Sam worked his tail off
  • recovery went as well as you could go under the circumstances
  • off the ice - he was involved in all the meetings, saw how the players prepared
  • put on 10-12 lbs of muscle

on how to balance short term team goals vs long term organizational goals:
  • you want to help your team - we are looking at a few things to help us down the stretch drive
  • but it can't be at expense of long term view of our team
  • like most teams we value picks - not just 1st round picks but all picks
  • deep draft coming up
  • still in an development and accumulation phase in terms of getting picks assets or young player assets
  • it is balancing act - it is based on the price

Mason McDonald:
  • Mason has had a good year
  • sees a lot of shots - hosts laugh - Treliving says it is great for his development
  • other night won 3-2 or 3-1 after facing 52 shots
  • big athletic goal tender
  • was tremendous in the U18s
  • has a real good upside to him
  • real competitive

Hunter Smith:
  • on a good Oshawa team has taken a step
  • a bit of a project pick - he is a big guy and still sort of filling out and getting used to his body. 6'7'' 220 lbs and still got of room to grow.
  • uptick in his production, uptick in his usage in Oshawa
  • was injured and missed games a few weeks back
  • in a great spot, team should have a long playoff run

Pat Sieloff:
  • pretty much missed the last year and half of hockey
  • views this as a rookie year
  • likes his competitive approach. real driven kid. heart and soul guy
  • battled a couple of injuries this year but for the most part have been able to keep healthy
  • been a real good development year for him and seen some real progress
  • has excellent coaching in Tod Gill and Ryan Huska
  • similar situation to Connor Murphy in Phoenix where you miss a lot of time. number 1 goal is to get games under your feet without missing long stretches of time and Pat has done that

2015 draft:
  • top end of draft has gotten a lot of talk and deservedly so
  • thinks it is a deep draft
  • everyone talks about the 1st round which is important, but in order to have success you need to find people outside of the 1st round
  • that is why you try to get more picks - try to hit on somebody in the 4th or later
  • if you do the work properly and have some luck you can have a couple of good days
  • overall he considers especially early there are some high end players
  • thinks you can get into the 60s (overall picks) and still find good players, but goal is to find them even beyond that
  • in today's trades a lot of the high end picks are for 2016 and that speaks to what people think of thi draft

end of Treliving interview

hosts go on to discuss Austin Carroll:
  • he reminds a lot of Lance Bouma.
  • plays physical, drops gloves once in awhile, not afraid to get dirty. power forward type.
  • Coach Dave Lowry says Caroll is a prototypical power forward which speaks volumes.
  • He is not too far away. Within a couple of years you will likely see him have an impact in the NHL.
  • Really thinks Carroll will be like Bouma - physical with some sneaky offence at the NHL level

I'll be surprised if Carroll ever plays an NHL game. He strikes me as a classic Jr player having a strong 20 year old season when he has the physical tools and experience that far exceeds most of the rest of the league. Once he moves up to the next level he will not stand out and fade away. Probably playing in the CIS in a few years.

But I am also very prepared to be proven wrong

I have to defer to others, I've never seen him play.

By all accounts though, he has NHL skating and NHL size, and a solid work ethic.....all traits that Bouma also had (which is who they compare him to) but Carroll actually is putting up better numbers in the WHL than Bouma did.

He also stood out in a good way at the development camp over the summer, and at the Penticton tournament. That was against a lot of NHL prospects. I agree that his points this season should be taken with a grain of salt, but with his skating and size I'd be more surprised if he couldn't find success in some role in the NHL.

I'm really not an expert in the area, but he has always stood out to me whenever I've attended Royals games over the past few seasons.

I haven't seen him play so I don't know, but what are you basing this on? He has good progression of numbers every year.

Yes, he's a 20 year old having a strong season, but that's what you want to see.

I thought Austin Carroll looked really good in camp this year.

I didn't know a thing about him and all of a sudden I was sucked in. He looked great compared to the other guys.

I overheard a conversation between Conroy, Treliving and the coaching staff at the prospects tourny and they LOVE this kid (Conroy in particular). Conny said that most teams in junior "try not to wake the bear" when playing against Carroll because when he gets mad and turns on the physical play, he's impossible to stop. Conny made him sound like Lucic- hits like a Mack truck, great fighter, all-around scary player.

Yeah... How Carroll has such good numbers is beyond me. He's not fast, shot isn't deceptive, not a high hockey IQ... Think he's been the benefactor of some good linemates/luck..

I've posted it before, but a guy who's written and and followed the WHL for almost 40 years thinks Carroll is an NHLer

I've watched Carroll play for the Royals the last 3 years. I'm not sure where you guys are getting your insight from, but I hope you're right. He's a nice kid. I've sat and chatted with his family a few times up in the buffet lounge. He comes from a good home it seems.. I just don't know if he brings anything really unique.

You could be right, but I bet you a lot of people said the same thing about Jooris.
