I don’t normally air my laundry in public, but I’m going to make an exception with U-Haul and hopefully save some others from the trouble I faced. If you don’t want to read the story, but want to know why you shouldn’t use U-Haul… scroll to the bottom.

My girlfriend recently moved from one side of Toronto to the other and rented a U-haul 17-foot truck three weeks in advance of the move. She did this over the telephone and reserved with a credit card, specifically requesting the U-Haul location closest to her previous residence (this request was acknowledged). She was told that they would call her the day before the move to let her know when to pick up the truck. They never called.

The day of the move, we called them early in the morning, and they said that they didn’t have a truck available yet, but would have one shortly and would call us. At noon, we called again and heard the same story. At 1:00 p.m., they called to “offer” us a truck in Fort Erie, Ontario, which is at least a 4-hour return trip (perhaps longer, it was a long-weekend). We refused and asked if there would be one available closer to us. They said “Oh absolutely – we’ll call you when one is available”. At 3:00 p.m., we called back and got the same rhetoric as before. At 5:00 p.m., they called and offered us a 14-foot truck (which likely wasn’t big enough) in a small town North of Toronto, which would have taken at least 2.5 hours return. Again we refused, as we had “helpers” waiting patiently and felt that this was too long of a drive for a truck smaller than we wanted. We never heard from U-Haul again. Literally. There were no further offers of trucks. No calls to apologize. No explanations. We ended up borrowing a cube van during the evening and made multiple trips (thankfully, it was only 30 minutes between each house) throughout the evening and into the wee hours of the morning.

The following day, I called U-Haul to “inquire” and was told that our reservation was for THAT DAY, not the previous day, so we shouldn’t have expected to receive a truck. I asked her about the previous offers and she didn’t have an answer, and changed the subject. I told her to cancel our reservation (after all, they had the credit card number). Since then, I’ve been treated in an extremely rude manner by U-Haul (and to clarify, I have never been rude with them). They have called me a liar. They have called me stupid for not taking the truck in Fort Erie. And they said there is no way in hell that they will compensate us for not meeting the reservation. Since then, I’ve discovered that this is an all-too-common problem with U-Haul. There is a site (http://www.uhaul-sucks.com/) and message board dedicated to horror stories – many of which are worse than mine (unsafe trucks, stranded loads, no customer support, etc.). I’ve decided not to pursue this any further with U-Haul, but rather to inform people of my experiences and hopefully discourage others from using them.

If you rent from U-Haul, you should know that:
· They make an unlimited number of reservations, regardless of how many trucks they have available. Therefore, these reservations are never guaranteed.
· They cannot guarantee a pick-up location, or city, or even district. This is part of their “contract”, which is not given/or explained to customers.
· There are many, many reports of ancient, faulty, or damaged equipment and very little service if something happens to break while you are using it.
· Their customer service staff will make promises that they simply cannot keep – evidently, this is their business model and they are non-apologetic about it.

I will never, ever use U-haul again. End of rant.

Yeah U-hauls trucks make the Canadian Army's look like 2004 models. I helped a friend move to Edmonton (boo) in one of these beasts and the thing was old and barely able to 90 km/h without overheating.

I recommend either Discount / Hertz or Avis. Brand new F350's. A little bit more but it's worth it. Actually depending on what you rent it can actually be cheaper than UHaul - Uhaul has a ridiculously high per km/ rate but a low daily rate to sucker you in.

I saw a show a couple of years ago, 48 hours or some such show, and they road tested a bunch of U-Hauls and something like 75% of them weren't even road worthy! Scary stuff.

I've rented from Discount without any problems, the truck was nice, safe, reliable, and the back was HUGE, fit everything I owned into it and still have lots of room to boot. I don't know what the prices would be in Alberta, but I recall them being resonable in Sydney.

I rented from The driving force in Edmonton to move. Very professional and almost the same price as Uhaul once you factor in the /km chanrge. It was a brand new truck.

My one and only Uhaul story was my own fault for being so stupid but...

Rented just a cargo van to do some moving for 2 days.

Gassed up before returning it. Brought it back at 10 minutes to 5 on a Sunday. The doors were closed, because they said that their computer systems said 5pm and they had to close down (lazy). They said to slide the keys and the contract under the door and they'd call me with the final bill.

Big mistake.

It would've been cheaper to keep it an extra day. I got a call the next day, and sure enough, they charged me for half a tank of gas, at their exorbenant rates, because they claimed I hadn't filled the tank. Of course, by the time I called, the van I rented "had gone" so there was no way for me to rub their faces in the dashboard so they could get a good look at the gas guage that was full, but they claimed was nowhere near full.

I talked to a "manager" but gave up fairly soon after hearing the exact same words from that person.

Rule: Make sure you get them to look at the gas guage when you return it.....

I don't know why I read these threads because they just annoy me.

Is it so hard to not be a crook? Is it so hard to not be incompetent?

If it's any consolation Aaron, I will never again use U-Haul because of what you have told me here. Well, also because I once used a storage facility that they were affiliated with and surprisesurprise they totally effed me over as well. My bill had only been paid in full for over a month but the brighteyes behind the counter was a little behind on her paperwork and they had locked my stuff up with their own lock. My old man told them we were going to buy some bolt cutters if they weren't there in 15 minutes and they said "then you will be charged with breaking and entering". Moving is fun enough but dealing with that bunch makes it even better.

The fat dummy showed up about 20 minutes later and opened the door and didn't say sorry but said something along the lines of "I usually don't work on Sunday", as if we were inconveniencing her. Gawdamn gets my blood boiling just thinking about it.

U-Haul Sucks!

I have also had a bad U-haul experience. Rented a van on my credit card for a girlfriend who was moving. They told us we could return it after hours by dropping the keys in the slot (which was about one foot above ground level, oddly enough).
Dropped the van off that evening, put the keys in the slot.
The next day they called and left a message for me saying the van was in the lot, but they couldn't find the keys.
Two days later, the van went missing and they sent the police to my house to interrogate me. They told the police the van was NEVER returned to them. Thankfully, I saved the message from the next day confirming the van was still in the lot. That's the only thing that got me off the hook. They have this stupid freakin' drop slot that's about two feet off ground level. Anyone could have take a coat hanger and scooped up any keys that were dropped there and then returned for the vehicle. I think it was probably one of their own staff members who took the keys. Who knows....but if I didn't have that message saved on my phone that clearly stated the van was on their lot that day...they are inept. I will never rent from them again either. I can't believe they are still in business.

Dude. This precise story happened to a buddy of mine who I rented a U-Haul with to move some office furniture.

Rented the U-Haul - returned it at night with the keys. They called and said the U-Haul was in the lot but the keys were missing. 2 days later they called him again and said someone stole the U-Haul and they think it was him. Charged his credit card like $1,500 bucks. Took months to sort out.

PM me with the location of the U-Haul you rented from. This sounds way too similar. Perhaps a scam.

Wow... I've personally never had any bad experience with U-Haul but after reading this it seems like perhaps I will never have another experience with U-Haul. I'll probably just stay clear from now on.
