Good & Cheap Hotel in Rome
Anyone have a suggestion for a steal of a deal, preferably near the Collieseo or Trevi or anywhere within relative close walking distance to the center.
My wife and I will be there in September and are looking for a decent place to sleep for less than $200/night. Rome is crazy expensive for hotels it would seem. Mostly looking for places that you have personally stayed at.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks!

Good luck....Rome is an expensive place. Prepare to get (over)charged everywhere you go, and for everything you do.
Tripadvisor is a good place to go to select a hotel. Use "best value" as a filter.

Step 1: Vist https://www.airbnb.com/s/rome?source=bb
Step 2: Select room type Entire Place.
Step 3: laugh at how cheap it is and wonder why you didn't use it sooner.

Thanks guys, I've looked at both Tripadvisor, Airbnb, hotels.com, trivago, and the rest.
I was mostly looking for personal experience recommendations.

Stayed at the panda I think it was called. Just down the street from the Spanish Steps.
Can't remember price but it would have been sub 200. Small but clean.

When we stayed in Rome we rented a condo that we found on vacation rentals by owner (vrbo.com).
It was awesome, I don't recall the exact price but certainly close to what you are looking for. Location was excellent. Walk out the front doors and the Coliseum was just down the street and of course, so were the ruins.
I know that's not right in the wheelhouse of locations you are hoping for but across the street from the Coliseum is the subway that will take you to the other locations but you could certainly walk from there.
Incredible location and a really good price.
And to boot, the owner of the condo had a driver pick us up from the airport and take us straight to the condo.

I stayed at Night & Day a few years ago. It was really close to the Trevi fountain, I walked past it several times every day. I paid 70 euro a night. Decent place. Your own bathroom. Shared kitchen. Close to everything. And the lady that ran it was super nice and helpful. Pointed out the best gelato and places to eat. And I would have missed my train if she hadn't informed me of a train strike.

We stayed at the Royal House hotel (last year), which is literally directly across the street from the Colosseum. It was very reasonably priced as well. Nice rooms, and they have a restaurant/cafe on the main floor and a terrace that's facing the Colosseum. We spent every night on the terrace drinking wine.
I want to go back now.

We've stayed in Hotel 21 a few different times while in Rome. It's close to everything, decently priced and the rooms are modern and clean.
Some of the lower end hotels, in terms of price, can be pretty sketchy.

I stayed at the H10 roma citta in May 2012. It was excellent. there is a roof top patio and pool, although the pool was closed during that month. The restaurant is top notch and they speak English if you don't speak Italian. There are some cool little pizza places, grocery stores, gelato shops, etc. around the corner as well. It's not near the Colosseum, but I liked that it wasn't. The public bus is a two minute walk and it's 1 Euro to take it downtown. There is a free shuttle that runs a few times daily that will take you downtown, but get there early and line up, as it's popular. Sometimes we walked back to the hotel from the sites, but that took about an hour.
I believe for the four nights there it was around $800 or so.

If at all possible, try to get a place on or near the Campo de Fiori.
It's ever-so-slightly off the main routes, has a market there every day which is nice, is just a fantastic place to spend your time, and is completely walking distance to Trevi, Pantheon, Spanish Steps. Colosseum and Forum are a little further. I did the walk, but I'm a walker, I walk everywhere.
Oh man, yeah... go to AirBnB.com and type in "Piazza Campo de Fiori, Rome" and check out the places that come up. I seriously cannot say enough good things about AirBnB, I've stayed in a dozen of them all over the world and have had great experiences every single time, both with the people renting their places, and the company itself.
This place OMG: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/2577377?s=jXdc

Although I didn't stay in Rome with AirBnB, I did just stay in Westbank last weekend for three nights there. I will definitely attest to the website being great. My only problems were when owners would take a while to get back to you if their places were already booked or not. We got a great place (2 bed 2 bath condo on a golf course) for much cheaper than any decent hotel. We'll use them again.

We stayed at the Hotel Lancelot. You can walk to the Colosseum from it!
The other place we stayed was in Trastevere, very un-touristy and fun but probably too far away for you.

Also try hostelbookers.com. Some of the private rooms you can get there are effectively B&Bs. I stayed 3 blocks from the central station in Rome for about $110 a night in a place where we had our own big room, ensuite, and a shared kitchen area. Hotel rooms in neighbouring buildings were all about $200 a night. It was a fantastic deal. Can't remember the name of the place, but it was one of about 3 similar ones on that site.

I'm staying in a BnB near the Vatican for a couple nights next week, 50 euros a night (for a single though). I felt fortunate to find something so reasonable (and highly rated on booking and TA) in Rome.

We ended up staying at the airport Hilton although that might not be your cheapest option.
They have a free shuttle service that runs every 20 minutes all day long and it takes you to most of the major attractions. Plus, they are directly connected to the airport, just a few minutes walk from your hotel room.
Recently I have found that you can quite often get just as good a deal booking directly with the hotel compared to booking with other internet companies.
