Sportsnet signs 12 year $5.2 billion for NHL CDN Broadcast rights.
http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/J...Canada-TV.aspx
Quote:
The NHL is crafting a series of Canadian television deals that could increase its average annual rights fees to more than $350 million, nearly double the current amount, while creating a Sunday night telecast franchise for the league.
The ongoing negotiations involve five Canadian networks: CBC, TSN, Sportsnet, and French-language broadcasters RDS and TVA. Negotiations are focused on 10-year deals, the same length as the $2 billion agreement between the NHL and NBC Sports Group that was reached in 2011. The forthcoming Canadian deals are expected to escalate in value over the length of the contracts, possibly exceeding a total of $400 million by the end of their terms.
CBC is expected to remain the NHL’s major partner and retain “Hockey Night in Canada.”
The league hopes to complete the deals before the Olympic break in February and could present any pending agreements as early as Dec. 9, when the NHL’s board of governors convenes in Pebble Beach, Calif., for the first of two days of meetings. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and Chief Operating Officer John Collins have led the negotiations for the league. The NHL and the networks declined to comment on negotiations.
The NHL is receiving about $190 million annually from its Canadian rights deals with CBC, TSN and RDS. Those agreements took effect in 2008 and expire after this season.

Quote:
he National Hockey League has reached a 12-year, $5.232 billion (Canadian) agreement with Rogers Communications for broadcast and multimedia rights, the League announced jointly with Rogers Communications on Tuesday.
The agreement is the largest media rights deal in NHL history and one of the largest media rights deals in Canadian history, including the largest-ever sports-media rights agreement.
The partnership between the NHL and Rogers begins with the 2014-15 season and runs through the 2025-26 season.
The deal gives Rogers national rights to all NHL games, including the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final, on all of its platforms in all languages.
The agreement is subject to approval by the NHL's Board of Governors, which next meets Dec. 9-10 in Pebble Beach, Calif.
As part of the agreement, Rogers announced that CBC will continue to broadcast Hockey Night in Canada and TVA has all of the Canadian French-language multi-media rights.

Not a fan of the 'Sunday night' telecast. Saturday is pretty jammed pack, and it might struggle going head to head against the NFL Sunday night game.
Sunday is also a day off hockey for me unless the Flames are playing.
But...these guys are a lot smarter than I am.

They should just make Bill Daly the commissioner already.

If they're smart, they make the Sunday night game a marquee game between two Candian teams or a Canadian team vs. Crosby/Ovechkin. That should ensure high ratings and eyeballs on screens

Expectation is that he will assume Commissioner duties after Gary retires following the NHL 100th anniversary season in 2017

Good news. I am happy that CBC will still be in the mix (I still prefer their telecasts for the most part to TSN/Sportsnet). Also, with the increase in revenues, that means the cap should be going up.

Yup The Maple Leafs will play back-to-back Saturday and Sunday night every single weekend of the season and then have a few Wednesday games sprinkled in for TSN.

I'll be glad if the CBC keeps HNIC in Canada. TSN does good work in a lot of places, but cutting to Jennifer Hedger and Sportscentre right after a game just isn't the Saturday night hockey experience to me.
CBC doesn't have the best talent anymore, but their overall hockey production is still the best.

Agreed. I really think they should keep Saturday of course and really try to focus on Friday night games. NFL has Monday, Thursday and Sunday. NHL should focus on Friday and Saturday nights IMO.

If someone (Rogers) is willing to back a dump truck full of cash into your lap to broadcast games on Sunday, why on earth do you say no?

Because it will compete head to head with football. Friday makes more sense for overall viewership IMO.

The NHL should force outfits like Rogers to actually spend money on their broadcast talent rather than dump down big money for the rights and then hire the cheapest talent they can get their hands on.

Good. I am one of (I assume) many who loathe being inundated with football on Sunday's.
In a country where hockey is king, going against the NFL isn't a bad bet.

That would be nice, but audience reach and national sponsors are obviously far higher priorities than the product their fielding methinks (see my various opinions in the Rob Kerr thread).

More than half the season will be free of competing with SNF. I don't see a problem with it. The NBA owns Sunday mornings/afternoons late January to February, the NHL can have Sunday evenings.

TSN may have the better analyst, but CBC is by far much, much better in the presentation department. CBC is not so overboard with the graphics like TSN is, and they capture the story and emotion of the game so much better. Their game intros are a work of art.

They also made a horrible decision by not paying for the HNIC theme ... but at least they wouldn't have pimped it out into a half dozen different remixes like TSN did.

SNF isn't that strong in Canada with typical viewership in the 400K range. The biggest competition would be CTV's prime time lineup, especially Amazing Race.
Plus Sunday is also one of the most watched nights of the week, while Friday is a dead period where low-rated shows are banished to.
