Default Biggest Loser Iceland - Episode 1 is up!

... Iceland version

Really freakin excited that yesterday after 1300 applications I was chosen as one of the 12 who will be on the 1st season of Biggest Loser Iceland.

I have battled my weight ever since the mid 90's when I lost my mother to cancer, and have varied well over 140 pounds up and down since then.

I am going to seize this awesome opportunity to get my health back and of course win the damn show too!

As things progress I'll be sure to keep you all in the loop, CP is a 2nd family to me and a number of you are on my facebook friends list.

If anyone wants to add me on FB and follow a long (https://www.facebook.com/thor.v.jonsson), you certainly can, otherwise I will post progress as the show allows since we start filming in mid September for 10 weeks and not sure yet when the first show will air.

The crazy thing is for that 10 weeks, I will have no access to internet, no phone, nothing... NO CP FOR 10 WEEKS! I already have the shakes.

I typically rail against "Biggest Loser" and hate the show with a passion. I think it is an unhealthy and unsustainable way to lose the weight, which is why the vast majority of contestants put the weight right back on:
http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/yoni-fr...b_2473934.html

However, what I have learned over the last few years is that there are many ways to skin this cat and I'm not about to condemn any persons efforts to lose weight. Any attempts to get healthier should be applauded and I wish you all the luck in the world.

This is the slide that I show at each and every one of my presentations (and I've done hundreds):

So, good luck. I hope it works for you.

One thing that I have done to lose weight and keep it off is to eliminate junk food entirely from your house. If you're hungry, you're going to eat something good for you.

I agree to be honest, the show in itself is about fast, and pretty massive weight loss which is unsustainable in the long run. Once you complete the show and are back to reality, you have to do smart and sustainable exercise and lifestyle changes. I have once before lost a seriously significant amount of weight, and the key to keeping it off is not be on any extreme diet/exercise program as a way to keep it off.

I will use this 10 weeks as a way to go crazy, drop lots of weight and after this is all said and done take on the challenge of regular exercise, sensible eating and changing my bad habbits.

Well, as per my link, my biggest fear is shutting down your metabolism which is what my eating disorder specialist doctor said is what I did.

I was in Calgary two weeks ago for a conference and one of the workshops was done by Dr Arya Sharma who founded the "Canadian Obesity Network", a network for doctors and other health professionals working on obesity. In his book he states:
"(the more weight you take off) determines how much effort it will take to lose the weight and to keep it off"

His rough numbers are:
10% effort can give a 5% weight loss
30% effort can give you a 15% weight loss
50% effort can give you a 20% weight loss
100% effort can give you a 50% weight loss

And this is because the body will try everything in its power to thwart your efforts, especially the more extreme you go. Cravings will skyrocket. Metabolism will come to a halt. Chemicals/hormones such as leptin and ghrelin will be out of whack such that you will not have any feeling of being full/satiated.

I spoke with the doctor after his workshop and said "I fall into the last category and I agree that it has taken 100% effort - I'm preplanning all meals, spending time with nutritionists, doing at least an hour of cardio every day and 30 minutes of weight training, going to weight loss / weight maintenance support groups 4 times a week." I asked the doctor if I have to keep this up forever. His response was, no. At some point I will die. Just likely at a much later date than if I had stayed at 350 pounds.

Just to give you an idea, I am a very tall man at 6´4 so I tend to be a walking wall

Here's last summer showing around PZ Meyers in Iceland, a famous biologist.

I'm the one on the far right:

Good luck Thor! Although I hate to think what they're going to make you eat on the Icelandic version... you probably have weeks of herring and lichen in store for you.

Mid september is the start of filming, when I move into the resort where this will be filmed for 10 weeks, then its 6 months after that which is the final weigh in.

During the 10 weeks I will be out of contact of course, but the show wont start airing I think until October I think, guessing at the moment.

Somehow I don't believe that statement.

BTW - I shared the Facebook link with my "Half Size Me" Facebook group (anyone can join, but there are three or four of us in the group that are half the size we used to be). So there is another few hundred cheering you on.

So between now and September do you waterlog yourself so that you can have a higher start weight?

Hmm I don't know, seems like it would only help me that first week, I don't see myself being in any danger of being in the lower half of the contestants after the first week weigh in.
