20 years maybe, but there's no way that anything happens in 10 years. A lot of "journalists" are treating this as if a 10 year renewal (MSG was asking for a perpetual renewal) means that there can't be a subsequent renewal, which is completely false.
The funny part about this whole thing is that it's been spurred by a desire for a new Penn Station, including a bunch of ridiculously over the top renderings, but there hasn't been a lick of work done on the actual essential elements of that redevelopment. Nothing on how it will be financed. Nothing on what they're going to do with the 40+ story office tower sitting on top of it. Nothing on how they're going to increase track capacity, which you'd think would be a must if the goal here is an actual train station and not just something shiny. It's one of the more pathetic things I've seen. Building a new Penn Station will be a multi-jurisdictional nightmare, with everyone wanting someone else to pay and everyone wanting their interests to take precedent. That doesn't get done in 10 years. Hell, an easier project like the 2nd Avenue subway line or the West Side access took decades.
The Dolans are pretty scummy, and they shouldn't be getting a free pass to do whatever they want on the site forever, but the rationale of 'it looks ugly and we were so stupid to knock down the old station' is a pretty sad one.
