Default Telus 50Mb/10Mb/500GB now available in Calgary

I just signed up for it, 70 bucks/mth, 50% off for the first 6 months. No contract required either, which is fantastic!

We're moving into a brand new home in Okotoks on Wednesday, was excited to hear that fiber is already laid direct into the home.

Those who already started using it since November in Vancouver and Edmonton are reporting some great results.

This bests Shaw's comparable offering (50Mb/3Mb/400GB for $75/mth). It's not actually listed on Telus' site yet as an available option, but if you actually go through the process of ordering a new bundle, and it's available in your area, it'll show up at the end as an available option to select from.

Very excited!

As discussed in the other Telus thread, the cap is going down to 250gb on this plan Feb 2013.

Is $70 the normal price or the discounted price? Assuming it's the normal price, it seems pretty comparable to Shaw's BB50 plan. You get a faster UL speed but a lower cap.

Precisely the reason I am thrilled there is no contract to sign up for.

When this change occurs, I will simply call Telus up and let them know I am switching over to the comparable Shaw plan because of the cap.

I guarantee they leave it as is rather than lose me as a customer.

70 is the normal price, so I'll actually pay 35/mth until June. Currently, both the upload speed and cap are higher on the Telus plan.

For those interested, the plan is called Telus Internet Extreme 50.

I have never been able to achieve any where near the advertised speeds with neither Telus and Shaw.

Yes, I can read. Just tempering the talk of this plan "killing" the competition. $5 for an upload speed boost at the expense of a lower cap in two months isn't "killing" anything. It's competitive. Which is a good thing.

Agreed.

Though, to my knowledge, Telus has never enforced the cap on bandwidth for us. I download quite a lot of HD content each month, but to be fair, our previous plan was extremely slow compared to this one, we lived in a remote BC area that didn't have access to Shaw, and only had Telus at very slow speeds. We maxed out at 6Mb/1Mb.

Here's hoping they continue to ignore the cap, though I'm not holding my breath on that one.

There are quite a few factors at play, but I'd look at the router being used as the primary offender. That's always a good place to start.

Let us know how it turns out - I know a lot of people were leery about Shaw's initial plan for caps and associated charges to the point Shaw backed down. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out with Telus.

And that's definitely a helluva speed bump you'll be getting.

Wondering if anyone else has this package and can speak to the consistency with which you achieve the advertised speeds?

You seriously underestimate how little of #### Telus cares about keeping you as a customer. I look forward to your "I hate Telus" rant thread in about 6 months.

I hope not.

In the past, whenever I've wanted to cancel a service, they've been pretty proactive in trying to please me.

From the research I did previously (dslreports, digitalhome.ca), the upload speed in the plan isn't stated to be anything specific, you just happen to get 10Mb/s (or higher) if there is available bandwidth. This is why the speed tests are so variable, which some upwards of 20Mb/s.

Maybe that has changed, or will when the plan becomes publicly available though.

Other than the upload speeds, this plan certain is unremarkable to say the least, since it otherwise just matches what Shaw has been offering for more than a year. When the bandwidth caps get lowered, then it becomes worse, especially since such a move would almost certainly be accompanied by Telus starting to meter.

If I was in the market to change providers, I would be holding off until both the plan being advertised to the general public and the actual results of the Feb 2013 bandwidth cap reductions. Jumping in now, assuming Telus remains willfully ignorant of their users usage, would be foolhardy, especially if a contact is signed.

I don't see it listed on their site but I have Shaw 50MB, phone and cable for $100/month. Actually $109.00 but I have a few extra channels ordered.

Can you spare 10 Mbps so that I can get a half decent connection in this day and age from Telus?

That's a great package. Is that standard cable, or digital?

I don't think Shaw gives out non-digital packages anymore. The only ones that exist, I believe, are grandfathered in.

Is 50 good on Telus? I've been on a 100Mb/s plan with Shaw in High River for almost a year and they offer the 250mb/s plan there also. One thing they don't offer at my place in High River is Telus.
