I did a search but I couldn't find any threads about San Fran. Any ideas on where to stay, hopefully some place where they have a lot of restaurants and bars. I'm also hoping to catch a Giants game, is AT&T Park easy to access via public transportation? Or is San Fran a place where I would need to rent a car? Any info is much appreciated .
I concur - keep it as "San Francisco" or simply "The City".
There is some discussion on The City in the travel YYC deals threads, I think it was.
Wow, I don't know what it is, but there's something about calling your own town 'The City' that seems incredibly arrogant. Then I think about how it's also my favourite city in North America (so far) so maybe they deserve to be arrogant.
My only suggestion would be to make time to just walk around. This is a city that is built for exploring, in that every street has something unique and interesting. All the hills make it a good workout, and will provide you with so many different views of the Bay and city that it becomes hard to stop going.
Be prepared for A LOT of panhandlers.

What would be the best location to stay at? I love walking around, but I'm thinking about night time. Is there a good central location that is safe?
We did a driving tour of Cali 2 years ago and San Francisco was by far the best part. I absolutely fell in love with this city. Where we stayed it was called the Lombard Motor Inn. I was OK, not bad not super. What was great about it was the location, it was just a few blocks from trolly and we took that around and walked quite a bit.
There is quite a few restaurants around there and more on the trolly routes.
I believe that the subway went to AT&T park, I think that I saw it on the maps posted around but I cannot say for sure.
I wish I could have stayed there longer and explored more and in turn give you better answers but if you go like I said this is my now favorite city and I cannot wait to go back.
EDIT
Also I was watching Worlds Weirdest Restaurants on Food Network earlier and they went to the Tonga Room and it looked great and very fun. http://tongaroom.com/

The last two times I've gone I've been able to snag a room for a good price in Nob Hill, but that was probably pretty lucky. Its a safe area, very swanky, and close to everything, but it can be tough to find a cheap room. If you can find one, jump on it! However, San Francisco is, to my knowledge, a relatively safe city so find a place close to or in downtown and you should be sweet. Just don't cross the Bay to Oakland.
I take it then that DJ's in SF sound the same as DJ's everywhere else, repetative, devoid of musicianship, new ideas or the slightest clue as to how to craft a song.
I've been to San Francisco around 15 times now I think. It's my favourite place to visit and watch baseball. I usually stay at the Westin on Third Street. Besides taking the BART to and from SFO, I don't use any transit anymore. It's about a 40 minute walk to Little Italy and another 5-10 minutes to walk to Fisherman's Wharf. The ball park is 20 minutes the other way. I've also stayed at Hilton on O'Farrell, Parc 55, Grand Hyatt, The Orchard and The Pickwick. The city is very safe. I've never once felt like I was in any kind of danger.
I know there are threads about this. I think there is a restaurant one and a travel one. I've posted numerous times in each one.
Here's a past link asking almost the same question, including calling it San Fran.

Union Square or the Wharf. The Wharf is super touristy, like almost Niagra falls touristy. If you want to have a thousand shops where you can buy different versions of that SF jacket you see around for $10 or the $3 SF hats then stay near the wharf. It's actually a good location is the majority of your itinery looks like Alcatraz tours and chowder in a bread bowl for dinner each night.
The other area is Union square, it's more urban around there, kind of like just south of Central Park or like along the Miracle Mile in Chicago. High density of hotels, higher end restaurants, tons of shopping of US department stores and high end brands like John Varvatos, Montblanc, theres a Niketown ... that kind of thing.
Rooms in Union square are smaller, if you have a kid traveling maybe the Wharf is better, but if space isn't an issue, nor are you on a tight budget, or if you are 50+ then you'll probably prefer Union Square.
Have gone to the Bay area a few times...a couple add ons...
-Go over to Sausalito...very artsy feeling, and the weather is usually nicer than in SF itself...we took the 'regular' ferry as opposed to the tourist trips from Fisherman's Wharf. The ferry terminal itself is a really cool building...reminds me of the old great train stations in cities like NYC or Toronto... Or you can cycle over the Golden Gate Bridge from the Wharf to Sausalito...if you are on a bike at all it will be a fairly easy journey.
-I've been to both Oakland and SF for ball games, and actually enjoyed my game in Oakland a bit more...I'd say SF is like watching a Flames game in the club, while Oakland is like watching the same game in the bleeds...maybe not as nice, but the fans are more into it. You can get to the Coliseum by train without going into 'Oakland' itself...
-Do not fly into Oakland airport instead of SF...it is about the same travel time to downtown for both, and you do get to go over the Bay Bridge, but when we flew into it the Oakland Airport looked and smelt like a 1970's bus terminal.

I'm going to guess the 9 fans that go to an A's game might be more into it than the 40,000+ that go to a Giants' game, but the total energy is not even close. The crowd at AT&T kicks the crap out of anything that Oakland can produce. A World Series title will do that to you. If anything, the A's are like the Flames, given the last time they won was 1989. AT&T Park is one of the nicest ball parks in the country. It has sold out 116 straight home games. Oakland is ranked 2nd to last in home attendance and has a tarp on the upper deck. I've been to 40-50 games in SF, usually sitting in clubs or lower box seats. The crowd there is as lively and knowledgeable as any park I've been to. The fans also travel well. Besides the 1989 World Series title, Oakland has nothing on San Francisco.

Search "wharf" or "alcatraz". There are lots of threads.

I agree with everything here, there really isn't any endearing qualities about a A's game, or going to Oakland in general.
Everything Too Short says about Oak-town is true, you don't need to find out for yourself
I'd recommend going to a Giants game, even if you aren't a baseball fan, it's a pretty unique stadium and people who have been to most parks have it somewhere in their top three (the top tier ones to me, and most I know are AT&T, Petco in SD and PnC in Pittsburgh).
