TNG is coming out on Blu Ray next year with all the film in HD and the special effects shots all redone because the originals were created purely on videotape and therefore are too low resolution to use.

What? Really? Sounds pretty expensive to redo all the special effects for a blu-ray release.

Yeah they'll have to be successful and have good sales to do them all, but I'd probably buy them.

You can see near the end, the shot is of the original model but at a higher resolution than it ever was on tape and there are people walking around inside the observation lounge window and the lights are all on when it goes into warp (it didn't used to, the lights used to go out).

Awesome!

But what's this 'three of the most popular episodes frin the series' nonsense? I hope that's not how it's going to go, and it's just to test/tease the market or something.

I don't know if I'd buy a HD TNG--the first three/four seasons were very spotty in terms of watchability--but if this set came in an entire series box and the price was reasonable, I'd probably pick it up.

Where do I pre-order DS9?

I think that's exactly it, re-doing all of them will be hugely expensive and they probably don't want to commit to doing all 178 or whatever episodes unless they KNOW they'll make money at it.

I don't think they'll be doing a big boxed set though, from what I understand it'll come out in chunks.

I'm currently watching through the TNG DVDs and started at Season 1. I'm on Season 3 and it is most definitely watchable today, and some of the most memorable episodes in the series also come from Season 3! (Think of ones like Yesterday's Enterprise)

Photon, we could probably use a separate topic for this side discussion but re: the TNG Blu Ray, the one released in January is just a sampler for fans. The episodes are Encounter at Farpoint, Inner Light, and Sins of the Father.

Remember, re-doing them all can make money because Paramount can now resell the episodes into syndication (networks or digitally) in HD much like they did when they redid the original series in HD with all the effects shots redone in CG.

Recently finished watching it from beginning to end.

Was amazed at how bad some small parts of it were, but was equally as amazed at how well some of it has stood up.

I outright hated TNG, just because the characters were milquetoast, the ship was ugly, Wesley Crusher made me want to bash my head in with a shovel.

They had carpet in the Enterprise, the ship never took real damage, and the universe always worked out right.

Give me DS9 anyday where the characters were flawed, they usually made bad decisions for the right reason. they took damage in battle and killed people in horrible ways.

And the universe was not a happy and safe place where things went wrong but could be fixed with diplomacy.

DS9 is still my favourite TV show ever. Mad Men is a close second.

I watch TNG for the nostalgia of growing up. I watch Deep Space Nine for the characters and the storytelling.
