This will be my first time traveling to Portland and was wondering for anyone that has visited have any suggestions for places to check out and places to eat.
Adidas and Nike outlet stores are there. Worth the trip if you wear that clothing or shoes.
Also downtown Portland is amazing to just chill. If the blind onion pizza place is still downtown, go there! I was there like ten years ago, it was owned by this Australian fellow and it was some of the best pizza I have had.
I'm still trying to decide which direction to head on a roady starting this weekend. Thought of Portland as well. Anyone say how many hours straight driving there? Google Maps says 14ish so I'm thinking I could shave an hour off that for sure....no?
If you are a person who likes taking some pics, being outside, drive east on the Columbia River Highway and visit all the places along ther. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multnomah_Falls is the most popular, but other falls and viewpoints of the gorge (on both sides) is worth it.

As a person who does an annual trip with a group of friends to eat and drink this is one topic I am glad to help with
#1 Do not miss POK POK it is on SE Division st if you like Thai food and even if you don't this is an absolute must. You must have the wings they have been voted the best appetizer it the US. They are amazing. It is busy every night if you must wait a couple of hours go to the bar across the street they own to wait, they will call you when your table is ready. I can't stress this enough if you are going for food go here, DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE!
2.try a food truck they are all really good and some interesting fusion ideas. My favourite is Koi, it is a mexican, korean fusion food truck, amazing food. Go on their facebook page that day and they will tell you where you are. But truly try the food trucks they will suprise you.
3. the japanese gardens are a nice place to go for a walk to work off a meal
4.they have a really nice MSL stadium now if you are into that
4.my favourite hotel is the Hotel Deluxe and they have a great lounge with amazing cocktails and the bartender muddles his own stuff at the bar.
5. every place is casual you never need to dress up,if you tip 20% you are a god down there and the service is great everywhere you go
6. if you are driving do some shopping at Trader Joe's they have some very good products and the prices are incredible. Your wife would love it. It is my favourite grocery store.

^ great pub in Portland, by the Kennedy School Hotel, which is an old elementary school converted. The rooms still have the original chalkboards in them. Very 'quirky' and fun place.
I second Voodoo doughnuts. Dont let the homeless people scare you away while you are waiting in line.
The Rouge brewing bar is good for beer, but everywhere down there is good for beer.
I liked the Widmer brewery tour when I did it.
Go try some mancakes at the stepping stone cafe. I have not had them but had some friends recommend them.
When I was there last i stayed at Ace Hotel and it was pretty cool. It is right on top of a stumptown coffee. Look in the drawers of the card catalog on the mezzanine. It is full of crappy poetry and letters written by the hipster-emo kids hanging around the lobby. They are hilarious. Also you get free bike rental at the hotel.
