Canadian Gov to legislate insanely loud commercials UPDATE: Takes Effect Sept 1st
I think this might be the greatest law ever suggested. I frickin' hate loud commercials.
Quote:
A Conservative MP introduced a private member's bill Thursday to force advertisers to turn down the volume on loud television commercials.Surrey MP Nina Grewal says Canadians are "sick and tired of having to reach for the remote control every time a commercial comes on their TV."
Bill C-621 would require broadcasters to make sure the volume of commercials is consistent with the programs they accompany.
While there are no laws in Canada to ensure programming and commercials are broadcast at a consistent volume, similar rules exist in both the U.S. and the U.K.
The Commercial Advertising Loudness Mitigation Act — or CALM Act — was passed last December, forcing the U.S. Communications Commission to regulate the audio of TV commercials so that they match programming volume.
Loud TV commercials aired by Canadian broadcasters are getting some noise control starting Sept. 1.
That's when the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) begins enforcing new advertising rules aimed at appeasing viewers who have complained about "ear-splitting" ads.
"Starting on September 1, Canadians will be able to enjoy their favourite television programs without having to adjust the volume during commercial breaks," the broadcast regulator's chairman, Jean-Pierre Blais, said in a statement.
I was expecting to come into this thread and be dissapointed. Now I am excited at the thought of such a bill. I am surprised it is not already in place like many other major countries

But with the advent of PVR's and the couch potatoes watching less and less commercials, I can't help but think a new wave of unique advertising is on the way. Unfortunately, I suspect it will come in the form of ads during shows. I know this already happens in some cases, mostly plug for a network's next show or whatever, but I'm sure they're brewing something.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.
In my office, I'll have BNN or CNN on through the day on the lowest volume setting and, particularly with BNN, loud commercials are very very irritating. Competely ridiculous.

This seems like the sort of thing they could build into my digital cable box pretty easily, without requiring a law. Any reason why Telus hasn't done this and advertised it as a reason to switch? (Shaw and Bell both own lots of TV stations, so they care about commercials more than Telus)
