Keep politics out of hockey. I hope Ovechkin breaks the record and peace for the entire world.
|
Oh you mean like when people hated on Tim Thomas for supporting conservative politics?
It’s totally different when a player is American or Russian vs actively supporting the murder of innocent civilians. Comparing this to cheering for americans is asinine.

Goal #848 for Ovechkin he is now 47 goals behind Gretzky.
Chatting about this with a buddy who thinks he breaks it next year. Being generous let's say Ovi gets 10 more this season. So roughly ~35 to get the going into 2024-25.
It think it's possible given him and the Caps had a bad start to the year. And even if he doesn't, it's almost a certainty he will get there in the seasons after. Crazy.

And again....he's not potting these against 80s goalies or defencemen. This is a legit Modern Era record.
And he's had shortened seasons due to a lockout and the Pandemic.
Its Wild and I hope he gets it.
Forget all the rest of the Nonsense, but this would be amazing.

He 100% is a scoring machine without a doubt. I never thought anybody would come this close and it looked like he was dead in the water a few months ago. Nobody knows for sure but it is looking more and more likely now.
That being said, he and today's players do benefit from a lot more opportunities to score. The game has changed, the rules, the way the ice is laid out, the training, diet, travel, medical, equipment and more.
Ovi is a lot more of a volume shooter, Wayne was still a much more efficient shooter. In a hypothetical scenario, Gretzky would have approx 1160 goals based on the same amount of shots Ovi has and Wayne's shooting percentage at the same age of 38.
We are seeing something truly wild overall though.

Gretzky also had the luxury of shooting against terrible goalies the first part of his career.

It's all relative in a lot of ways. Perhaps the goalies were not the greatest but the goalies then had to deal with things that today's goalies just don't.
Everything is different, nobody could touch Gretzky in terms of sheer dominance. Sometimes it's hard to wrap your head around the level of dominance compared to his peers. #2 all time is Jagr and played until 46 years old. Statistically speaking, almost a non factor. Gretzky has 50% more points. You can't find that gap in other sports.
The craziest way to look at it is taking away all of Gretzky's 894 goals, he still has more points than Jagr. When your #1 in something, have that taken out, and still #1, it's wild. In a hypothetical business comparison, if the #1 energy company in the world Saudi Aramco stopped selling oil, but still gas and was still #1 in revenue vs Exxon Mobile, you can't compare.
Ovi may break the record but everything is pointing to having an insane amount of help in the way the game has changed to assist with that too. 3 on 3 OT? The #1 scorer and passer in the game would have ended almost every single game.
Love Ovi though

Playoff goals don't count and if you're cheering for Ovechkin to break Gretzky's record, you wouldn't want them to. Ovechkin has 71 playoff goals, Gretzky has 122.

Pretty amazing that he’s still playing at the level he is at 38. Still leading his team in scoring. They really don’t have anybody to help Ovechkin in Washington either. No supporting cast.

Ovechkin played the majority of his career where 16 of 30 teams made the playoffs
The Weiner played where 16 of 21 teams made the playoffs.

Absurd take
50s: 2.63
60s: 2.94
70s: 3.25
80s: 3.81
90s: 3.18*
00s: 2.79*
10s: 2.80
last 5 years: 3.08
*'90-96: 3.32
*'97-04: 2.66
*'05-'10: 2.91
Gretzky's Career: 3.50 (3.71 for the first 15 years)
Ovi's Career: 2.90 (2.85 for the first 15 years)
Our current 'high scoring era' is essentially the median since '67. The first 14 years of Gretzky's career were all in the top 15 years all time. Every year of ovi's career until the last 3 were below median.

^^ Yeah, in Gretzky's heyday guys like Pierre Turgeon, Joe Juneau, Craig Janney, Barry Pedersen, etc. were scoring over 100 points. Jimmy Carson, John Ogrodnick, Dino Ciccerelli etc. were scoring 50 goals.
