Since we’re basically out of contention now, they should have just pulled the goalie at the start of the game and told Ovi to go for it.

No they should have told the entire team to play hung over which is an advantage Gretzky certainly took advantage of in the 1980s.

This is so ridiculous and overblown.
Gretzky's opponents weren't hungover, its more likely that they were currently drunk.
The stories about crushing sixers between periods in the locker room in the 80s?

For '12-13 (lockout shortened season of 48 games), an additional 34 games at 0.7 goals/game would add 24.
For '19-20 (Covid shortened season, 69 games played for Washington), an additional 13 games at 0.7 goals/game would add 9.
For '20-21(Covid shortened season of 56) , he played in 45 of 56 games (80%) at 0.533 goals per game would add 11 with 66 games played.
This totals a simple prediction of 69 best-case scenario additional goals had there been no work stoppages or global pandemics.
If not for the stoppages, the real question would have been if he could have hit 1000 goals.
But...maybe one of those lost games could have been the game where he suffers a career threatening injury so best just focus on what he has accomplished thus far.
|
Also, if he had been born 2 days earlier, he would have been draft eligible in 2003 and could have played in 2003-04.

50 to pass. His second half of the season has put him back on track. A few more this season will go a long way to help him pass Gretzky and maybe get to 900.

If Ovechkin wasn’t best friends with a war mongering totalitarian I’d love to cheer on him beating out Gretzky. Ovi’s accomplishments are incredible, politics aside, but he is a POS by association and I hope he never breaks the record because of how poorly he associates himself.

Awesome for Ovechkin. Funny how people had no problem cheering for American NHL players when George Bush killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis but Ovechkin is a POS for supporting his president....double standards much?
Keep politics out of hockey. I hope Ovechkin breaks the record and peace for the entire world.

I’m rooting for Ovie to break the record and he’s been one of my fav players since entering the league but when I first read this I thought it was a bit of a ridiculous comparison, only because I don’t remember players really backing Bush nor any other US invasions. I was going to respond saying that but I’m older now and figured I should try and fact check, found this article:
https://yvesengler.com/2023/04/01/nh...torical-roots/
Not sure about the source but was able to corroborate the details with some google searching. Anyways it’s eye opening but it doesn’t make me hate any of the players mentioned in the article. The other major factor is although Ovie has shown support for Putin in the past he has stated he does not want war and just wants peace. He won’t outright denounce Putin but I think we’re all aware that dissent towards Putin can lead to some serious consequences. Pretty big contrast to the players in the article who were fully in support of invasions.
Anyways not trying to throw any players under the bus, just saying this poster made a really good point and I’m glad I learned something from it.

Ovi had 8 goals in his first 43 games this year.
He now has 8 goals in his last 5 games.
