Talking heads are now moving the goalposts to justify their grease fandom reducing the number they expect needed to get in every time they talk. By January the Oil will be certain to make the playoffs because they’ll say it’ll only take 82 points to get the last wildcard.

If you aren’t thinking 95 is the number you are dreaming. Could be less but only if you are lucky

Catching the caps in a tryptophan coma is nothing to brag about.
They're gonna go right back to getting their asses kicked against the next team that shows up

Yup, Flames and Nashville are going to push the needle up. Oilers are still on pace for like 56 pts.

Flames better do well because I honestly don't see Seattle, Arizona, Anaheim, ect. getting 96
Even low 90s will be a reach for the Oilers though

Oilers attract free agents by touting Edmonton's vibrant nightlife.
Opens this Monday!

The only thing that might save the Oilers is that the 95 point barrier might not be the win mark to make the playoffs. Seattle in the last wildcard spot is on a 78 point pace. St Louis is about 82 points. Now they're not going to catch LA who's on a ridiculous I think 123 point pace.
So the Oiler's only hope is the wildcard. But here's the ouch factor on that. There are 5 teams between the Oilers and the wildcard teams. And 3 of these teams have opened up their lead on the Oilers in the last 10.
Their next 3 games are against the Ducks, Vegas and the Jets. Its not out of the wild realm of expectation that the Oilers drop all three after taking off the pressure with their big win against Washington. But a 1-2 run is not out of the question, and that's hugely devastating.
The Oilers aren't just chasing those wildcard teams, but they're competing against 5 other teams chasing those wildcard teams.
And I doubt that the Wildcard teams are going to continue to be this cold.

Can anyone explain the Oiler navel gazing notion that it will take fewer points to make the playoffs in the western conference this year when the bottom 4 teams in the league are in the western conference? Last year only 3 out of the bottom 4 were in the west.
Are all the bottom 4 teams going to get better like the Oilers and steal points from prospective playoff teams?

It doesn't much matter where the bottom teams are. What matters is the wild-card race.
Right now, Carolina has the 8th best points percentage in the East at .579. Arizona is 8th in the West at .500. Even if both conferences perform equally from here on out, those points are already lost, which will make it slightly easier to make the playoffs in the West.
Not that this can save the Oilers, because as we all know, nothing can save the Oilers.

The Edmonton Oilers are the Richard Carrier of the NHL.
