Taxpayers pissed they have to subsidize Heat
Especially this one:
Quote:
"The city is indirectly a part owner of the team, providing free ice time and fronting its expenses. If the hockey team is short, more money will have to be dished out," she said.
Kaetler said the expenditures come at a time when the city is having trouble paying for police officers. Abbotsford-Mission was dubbed the murder capital of Canada in 2009.

I don't know what kind of business model they're running but I don't disagree with them. The Calgary Flames should be filling the bills if their farm is short not the city, it is a private business isn't it?
Hockey should be taking a backseat to more important government spending like police, etc.
Frankly, I don't mind the Dome and if the Flames or the Oilers want to build new arenas than do it out of your pocket, they make enough money.

this may sound weird, but I think it is unlikely the Flames have anything to do with this. They run the hockey opperations (players, coaches, trainers, hockey management and related salaries); Lane Sweeting and his group run the business side (tickets, marketing, travel, building ops).
This is a deal between Sweeting and the city of Abbotsford. Abbotsford built the arena without having a tenant. In order to get an AHL franchise, they had to meet certain requirements (upgraded scoreboard, locker rooms and training room, iirc). A deal signed in good faith by both parties.
This latest development is Abbotsford city council putting money into their investment. They had a choice not to, and the citizens can be upset that politicians spent taxpayer money in this way, but the Flames are bystanders, and Lane Sweeting et al are beneficiaries who would have to be stupid to turn this down

I was going to say something similar. Its either the City of Abbotsford makes up the shortfall over the short term of an AHL team or they can pay the whole costs of an empty Arena that generates little to no cashflow. Seems like an easy call to me.
If shes mad about anything she should be mad that the City council built a tenant-less arena.

Why exactly did they move to Abbotsford again? It's not a hockey town and any loyalty goes to the Canucks first and foremost.
You can call the woman a lesbian if you want, but the fact is, she's right. Public services, utilities and infrastructure are way more important than any hockey team.

It's not that uncommon for a municipality to build a facility without a major tenant and than end up trying to subsidize one and lose their shirt. I lived in St.Albert when they tried to get the AJHL back as the city lost a huge amount of money on their fancy rec center and needed the tax payer to subsidize the facility.
It's a similar thing in Penticton where they built a nice fancy event center and the BCHL team isn't drawing enough people and it's a pretty sum per game that the city is footing to use that facility.

Then dont build the damned building. Public services, utilities and infrastructure would be signigicantly worse off than they already are if the Heat weren't there covering at least some costs. The they'd be paying for EVERYTHING on their own. At the moment they're only covering the shortfall.
It could be worse. She keeps bitching, then they move the Heat (they'd never move an AHL franchise though, dont worry, it almost NEVER happens) and then the city is fronting all the costs on an empty building that doesnt support itself.
But that'd be okay. Right?

You guys realize Plan A (which brought the new rink to Abbotsford) was BARELY voted in at the time. Something like 52% voted in favour. Of course the taxpayers are pissed now. Especially the 48% that voted no.

This is prob the last straw in the Lower Mainland. After footing the bill for the Phoenix Coyotes via canucks tickets/merchandise, they have to pay for this?
Not surprised people aren't happy.

I never understood why the Flames moved their farm team into Canucks Territory other than they were getting a sweet deal from the town.
Why can't the farm team be based out of Calgary just like the Marlies play in Toronto?
Isn't there a new hockey facility being built at Canada Olympic Park?
Couldn't they play at the Saddledome or the Corral?
