I second basic... the Salad and Pizza are great! Also try the neighborhood pub (777 G Street), food is great and lots of great beers.

You can park a car at the duty free shop and walk across too, but I totally agree that it's not worth driving across the border. Taking the trolly to the border and then walking is probably the best way though. Just don't plan to come back across between 5am and 10am on a weekday, because it's a mess.

Find if San Diego actually means "Whale's vagina" in German.

I actually didn't like Basic, but a good bar if its still there is the Knotty Barrel. Same general area. The USS Midway however, was my favorite part of San Diego. Going to two Padre games was second, although that doesn't help you in February.

Oh, and go for lunch at Anthony's Fish Grotto down by the Midway.

Honestly you probably couldn't go wrong with any local Mexican shack... at least that the case in most of LA anyways.

Actually my favorite Mexican joint is up near the gayborhood in Hillcrest. http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/27/14726...sine-San-Diego The chips and queso they give you as soon as you sit down is worth it.

I'll second the comment above that mentioned Old Town San Diego. Cafe Coyote is a good spot there for Mexican food but it's a really cool area to even just walk around.

Gaslamp quarter is also awesome for bars and restaurants. In Gaslamp, there's a seafood restaurant called Blue Point. Great food -- the Lobster Bisque especially.

Breakfast spot at gas lamp, Broken Yolk is fantastic.

Try and find the rickshaw driver lady with the great ass...
I fell in love each time she came around the block.

Old town, is great, so is Coronado island. We really liked the Midway museum and nearby Seaport Village.

Check out the Hotel Del Coronado if you want to see one of the oldest hotels in the western US.
