Should be an easy yes but there's never a sure thing with the whacked decision making of Murray Edwards, Ken King and the Flames management.
The biggest question of the offseason as everything else will hinge on this decision.

I think it's a no brainer but I seriously have no idea what ownership wanted out of this year and the bizarre contract situation (compared to how other teams handle it) has me worried.

If the Flames don't bring back Brad then I seriously question if this ownership group has the good sense to ever have a successful hockey team
Might as well start cheering for a new franchise if they don't because this team will be going nowhere for a very long time

Foolish to say this.
When he got Elliott and Johnson, IIRC they had the #1 and #3 best sv% respectively in the entire league since Nov 1, 2015. Brad did his homework.

Or maybe—just maybe—people's expectations are completely unrealistic.

It's not saying much, but Treliving is one of the best managers this team has ever had.

Couldn't have said it better. If they move on to yet another GM, they're not going to get decent candidates because no one coming in will trust ownership to have their back. The good candidates will hold out for more stable situations.

Do you really think that is the case though? There's only 30 GM job in the NHL and only about two or three of those come up every year most of which have an incumbent already sitting in the organization. They can't be selective or wait for an opening that may never come up. They have to go to where the opening is.

It would be a mistake to let Treliving go and I suspect he wouldn't be out of work long.
The Elliott acquisition was a great gamble at the time but one that failed despite all evidence pointing otherwise.
Really his only big fault so far has been over-valuing grit and such. After the Bollig, Bouma, Engelland, and Brouwer mistakes, you hope he's learned his lesson there finally - really he should have learned it prior to the Brouwer signing but that's in the past now, despite all warning signs against that acquisition. With today's cap environment you simply can't waste valuable dollars on guys whose on-ice performance doesn't warrant so. I get Engelland was maybe a cap floor thing, if you buy that, but the rest are inexcusable errors. Paul Byron and ~$3 million in cap space instead of Brouwer sure would have been nice.
His next big test is Michael Stone. Will Treliving buy into Stone's PDO-driven hot streak and make him the next anchor contract, or will he see him as the #6 defenceman he is and act accordingly? I don't mind having Stone back, but you can't get into a bidding war with another team over bottom roster guys.

I don't understand how you can say that Treliving didn't execute on the goalie front.
Johnson was excellent last November/December.
We rode Elliott into the playoffs from February on.
The options last summer were: - over pay for Marc-André Fleury
- over pay for Ben Bishop
Treliving found a new option in Brian Elliott for a 2nd round pick (and a conditional pick if resigned).
Fleury lost his starters job in Pittsburgh this year; Bishop's stock fell so hard that the Kings acquired him for a 5th round pick to be a backup.
Did Treliving find a diamond in the rough that stood on his head leading us to the finals and then the division and a Vezina trophy? Nope. But seriously if that's your standard, no one will live up to those expectations.
Treliving made this team better, he's not sacrificing the future to chase a run now when we aren't ready.
We all knew Elliott and Johnson were stop gaps, yes they faltered at the end, but in fairness we didn't expect them to plan a parade down 17th Ave either.

Is there a blood test to determine who is a "real" goalie? Evidently you don't think past performance counts for much.

Was never very sold on him in his first couple of seasons but the Flames should bring him back. Didn't like losing Hartley, but GG has ultimately worked out well. He completely screwed the goaltending last season, and the whole team through the goaltending problems, and Elliott screwed the pooch in the playoffs but was a good pickup when the change was made. The choice of Elliott and Johnson was fine. Stone was a good pick-up.
At this point, changing everything up is not the solution anyways. A new GM likely means a new coach, and the team is finally playing a good game with GG. Starting over on that would be a big step backwards.
