That's great news actually. Odds are we grab a pretty good player with our first and one or two good players will fall to the second round for us too.

Some might think he still has an elite ceiling though.

Is he at this point considered a high risk, high reward?

I can't say for sure, but it's a red flag for me. It's not the same as falling on draft day. Falling on draft day just means that teams have one guy higher on their list. One dude could be the second highest-ranked on 10 teams' lists in a row and fall 10 spots.
Falling in rankings as a result of continued viewing of these players (and, during a draft year, the closest scrutiny you're going to get) means you have suddenly stopped progressing relative to your peers, which is a bad sign. Or even worse, that you've stopped progressing at all. Guys can look good at 16 relative to their age group but at 17, when more players are filling out into their eventual frames, if you haven't at least kept up, I'd be staying away.

Yeah, I would stay away from a player falling like that unless it is a really late 1st or early 2nd rounder. Since prospects are all about the future, trajectory is a very important thing to consider. Just like when a player that was previously unnoticed works their way to being considered in the top 30-45 by a team, I think it is justified to draft them even higher than that (and then watch the fans freak out because it is off TSNs board and Duthie will make fun of it).

Depends on where you take him. If you take him in the 10 to 15 range it is probably a little risky based on the rankings now.
Is he still going to be a NHL defencmen, probably. The likelihood that he will be an elite or even a top pairing defenceman has probably diminished greatly in a lot of people's eyes. A more likely projection is 2nd pairing d-man (again depending on who you ask).

He has been playing against men since last season, a big reason he was hyped a lot for this draft. A 16 year old who broke into a men's league lead a lot of people thinking he had elite potential.
While he hasn't played bad in the men's league, he hasn't played great either seemingly plateaued.
What is really hurting his draft stock is that he has looked bad in international tournaments against others in his age group.

Nope. Go Pens!
Edit: Surelossed for the first time!

At the time that deal was made, I would have a good laugh if that deal was lottery protected. This season has been weird!

you'd think given that "lottery protecting" a traded pick is an actual thing, that GMs making trades, especially earlier in the year wouldn't get cocky/confident in their current position in the standings when trading the asset, and would use this tool to protect themselves.
Pretty sure the pens considered the asset being traded to be a 23-30th pick in the first round, and that was the asset value the trade was built upon, not potentially the 14th (who knows #1 lottery pick)...

I'd laugh if it were anyone other than the Oilers holding that pick.

Kevin Lowe is an evil genius that sent Perron to the Pens knowing that he would ruin team chemistry and take the Pens out of the playoffs. Pens 1st ends up winning the draft lottery, and Oilers walk away with McDavid and Hanifin. Well played Lowe, well played.
If that actually happened, I think I would stop watching NHL hockey for good.

If it were anyone other than the Oilers that had the pick, I'd actively hope for the Penguins to "win" the lottery. Karma for tanking in '84 and "winning" the Crosby lottery in '05.

I like Zboril and Chabot in this year's draft.
I know its always BPA but would be nice to get a solid D prospect in the system.

What do you guys think about evgeny svechnikov? I know he is Russian but a big scoring RW is exactly what we need. I wouldn't mind drafting him if he was available

I prefer Meier (though he will likely go too early for us) and Sprong (providing we teach him to play defence!) more from the Q.

Oilers are pretty much guaranteed to not get Eichel now. It's either McDavid or someone like Strome or Marner looks like.
