With last night's win, the red snake remains 3 points above the purple snake, and is now a season's high 14.683 points above the black line. That mark bests the purple snake's peak of 14.073 points after game #64. It's the highest peak of any Flames team since the 1988-89 season. The 2005-06 snake's peak was 8.341 after game #80.

I'm so proud of our little snake. It ate everything in its path and grew up into the biggest snake ever.

On February 2nd, FBI posted this:

At the time, the red snake was 4 points below the purple snake and 2 points above the black line. I pointed out the purple snake was about to go 8-1-1 in the next 10 games, so the red snake would have to win the next 12 games in a row to pass the purple snake at the earliest point (game #53). I also stated the red snake would have to go 29-12-0 in the remaining 41 games to finish above the purple snake at the end of the year. The purple snake, in case you forgot, was the second best regular season record the Flames ever had. Passing the purple snake seemed unlikely to me.

Well, the red snake won the next 8 games, making it 10 wins in a row. It passed the purple snake after game #55, and has not been below the purple snake at any point since then. With 108 points, it will now finish above the purple snake when the season ends. 29-12-0 was required, and with three games remaining in the regular season, the red snake went 27-7-4 in the previous 38 games (125 point season's pace).

The red snake is now at 108 points, a season's high 15.512 points above the black line, and 3 points above the purple snake. It is on pace for 112 points.

A record of 50-20-10 in the first 80 games has forced another expansion of the y axis on both charts. The red snake is 16.341 points above the black line and 3 points above the purple snake. It is on pace for 113 points.

Well how about that? 96 points gets you to the dance in either conference.

At this point 83 points would have put the 8th place team in the east in the playoffs

The fact that you had to change the scale on that Snake says something! It's awesome, and this season totally blindsided me. A remarkable job by the entire organization.

83 points would be 9th in the east, 17 points behind the 8th place Washington Capitals.

Washington didn’t need 100 points though, they only need enough to beat 9th.
They’d be in if they had 83.

I fear for your future. Snake is a target to pretty much guarantee making the playoffs.

Any team with 96 points this year made the playoffs. The logic of the snake has been proven in spades this year.

Ah yes, the great snake debate.

Do you have to be a top 8 team or simply be ahead of the bottom 8?

That's disingenuous. There is a large gap between the top 8 and the bottom 8 in the east. If Washington only had 83 points, those 17 points would have to go somewhere. Do they all go to the Islanders? Probably not, but they have to go somewhere. If the Capitals only had 83 points, the thought process that if you get 96 points you will make the playoffs, still holds true.

The theory isn't to get one more point than 9th place. The theory is that if you get 96 points, you will make the playoffs. No team in the west has acquired 96 points and missed the playoffs. That's not to say you need 96 points every year. It's only saying that if you get 96 points, and you are in the west (like the Flames), you will make the playoffs. That holds true again this year, and it holds true for both conferences. Every team that acquired 96 points made the playoffs.

Yeah sorry, honestly didn’t notice which thread this was. Was a strange year in the east.
