“He claimed to be injured when we traded for him, so we had him see the doctors,” Briere told Philly Hockey Now(opens in a new tab). “They found an injury, so now he’s going to be rehabbing. You can’t send down a player who’s injured, so he’s going to be doing rehab until… we don’t know when.
“That’s about all I can say at this time, or all that I have. So, he’s back on our roster doing rehab and trying to get better.”

Sean Walker looks really good against the Oilers. Weird the Flyers who are trying to stay competitive would trade him. Even if he is due a raise.

The bigger implication for the Flyers is that if Johansen is still injured during the buyout window they cannot buyout the last year of his contract.

Shouldn't Colorado be liable for trading an injured player if it was undisclosed?
Hss the potential to get messy!

Only if the Avs were aware of the injury... based on the messaging it sounds like the "injury" happened on the flight to Philly or when he got the news that he was going to the Flyer's AHL team.

You shouldn't scare quote the word injury... it makes it seem like you're saying the injury isn't real but the Flyers own doctor found the injury so he's clearly not faking.

It looked like he played his normal 11 minutes the game before the trade. Wonder if he hid the injury from the Avs.

Briere invoking the "claimed to be injured" verbiage is dripping in distain for the player and situation they find themselves in.

Probably the kind of injury that most guys would play through, but is a legitimate injury. Wouldn't both disclosing it to the team, but if it stops you from getting sent down, suddenly it's worth recognizing.

The thing is if he gets sent down...he makes more as he'd be escrow exempt. The injury is far more likely to try and prevent a buyout. No bonuses and 8 million in salary owed, he would lose 33% of the gross earnings in a buyout.

How does a buyout effect a team that has retained salary? do they retain the same amount of salary and incur the same cap hit? (Preds) or to they get a reduced as well?

They get the buyout cap hit at whatever % they retained at.
So in Johansen's case, Nashville would split the buyout cap hit with Philly 50/50.

I was wondering the same thing, so I put Erik Karlsson to see what would happen. There was this note on the butout:
Quote:
Retained Salary
This contract was involved in a retained salary transaction. The resulting costs and cap hit are therefore split between each team based on the percentage of salary retained by the respective teams.
|
SJ retain 13% so looks like they would still be on the books for 13% of the buyout cap hit.
So in the case of Johansen, looks like Nashville would still be on the hook for 50% of the buyout cap hit.

It works in Nashville's favour in this case. But I could see a team being mad if they banked on a retention for one period of time and planned on being at the cap the next year, only to have to pay dead cap for a longer period of time on a buyout.
