I would agree in the sense that nobody deserves to be murdered, but in terms of say someone selling fentanyl (especially lacing other drugs with it before selling it to unknowing buyers) or dealers selling anything to children, those are pretty much the last people in the world I will mourn for being murdered.

The actual case. Hits a guy over the head multiple times with a glass bottle, puncturing an eye, because he believes the victim might be gay. Shows zero remorse, actually laughs at the police when they charged him. Multiple convictions prior including assault, fraud and possession of stolen property.
No 100% confirmation that it's the same person, but the documents shows that he was the oldest sibling and would have been the same age, so pretty dang likely.

Jesus.
The only motivation for the assault appears to be the accused's perception that the victim was a homosexual and the fact that he is of French nationality,"
The first strike broke the bottle and the second caused several lacerations to the victim's right eye, puncturing his eyeball, the Herald reported.
The assailant confessed to an undercover police officer in a cell, still referring to the victim as "a fag,"
The case summary is even worse.
The Accused’s assault was unprovoked.
The Victim was unarmed.
The Accused ignored the Victims’s attempts to verbally defuse the situation.
The Accused did not assault the Victim until the only other occupant of the bathroom had left the location. As a result, the Victim was alone and isolated when he was assaulted by the Accused.
The only motivation for the assault appears to be the Accused’s perception that the Victim was a homosexual and the fact that he is of French nationality.
The Victim (should probably read as Accused) concocted a false alibi and attempted to recruit his friends as part of that false alibi.
The Accused has not demonstrated any remorse for his behaviour and has not accepted any responsibility for the injury to the Victim. The Accused remained at large from November 1, 2003 to February 3, 2004. The Accused did not turn himself in. When initially interviewed by the police, the Accused laughed about the incident. While in a cell with an undercover officer, the Accused demonstrated no remorse for the Victim’s injury.
The Accused was not remorseful after he assaulted the Victim. The Accused was not remorseful upon arrest. The Accused was not remorseful in his discussions with the undercover officer. The Accused was not remorseful with the author of the Presentence Report. In fact, the expression of any remorse is only commented upon after the Presentence Report had been issued noting the Accused’s lack of remorse. The Accused’s presentation of remorse is contrary to his words and actions following this offence. The Crown submits that the Accused’s presentation of remorse is manipulative and hollow.
The Accused has never displayed any empathy for the Victim.
The Accused has breached his conditions of release on three subsequent occasions by consuming drugs, carrying weapons, attending bars, and breaching his curfew.
The Accused continues to minimize and rationalize his assault on the Victim.

In conclusion: sh1tty for the families, bystanders, first responders.
But doesn't sound like those brothers were much of a loss.

Yes, Taha is the brother and the one that commited suicide. He always had a loose screw and was always getting in trouble. I'm no mental health expert but I can say with certainty he had mental health issues. Everyone knew it and could see he needed help, I'm not really sure if he ended up getting it but this was close to 20 years ago and things didn't seem to change for him. I didn't really keep in touch after school but I heard stories of the problems he had.

I can understand the hatred for fentanyl dealers and dangerous drugs like that but come on, we all know not all dealers are of the same breed. Some sell harmless drugs like marijuana and don't deserve to die. Guys that sell dangerous drugs that kill other people are the ones that deserve the hate, but we don't know if that's the case here

Just curious if you've changed your stance then. In a previous incarnation you steadfastly believed drug addicts deserved to die, full stop.
Have you softened on that stance?

Absolutely he did used to stand by that. He seems like a different person these days, though, so that's a good thing. We all evolve in our beliefs.

Wow, just realized Ismail is Taha's younger brother. If he's anything like Taha, he got what he deserved. What an absolute garbage family. Glad they aren't around anymore.

I cannot believe he only got a four year sentence for such a barbaric attack.

facebook search of the accused name yields one hit in Calgary - a quick scan of his FB posts suggest someone who seems fascinated by rap music, money and whose car was seized and seemingly faced a sentence appeal (I assume he is not working on something that would be eligible for a giller award).
no pictures of this guy wearing white oakleys but there is a gym selfie.
three young guys lives drastically altered.

Glad to see that not even a year after he was charged with those weapon crimes, he was able to gun down a couple people at a busy store. Clearly he learned his lesson and whomever released him showed great judgement .
Can't wait to see what kind of a joke sentence he gets and to read about him in the future.
