Starting to look like Murphy and Lack were simply cap dumps.
They may not want Kanzig at all but CGY may have said, take one of our worst prospects back just because of contract numbers.

For this offseason, it's like the 38th time to
#TrustInTreliving
Wasn't my idea tender tandom, but actually really intrigued and actually quite pleased with a Smith-Lack tandom.
Really like Murphy in his draft year and loved that part of the trade, but obviously with the announcement of his buyout, he's not in the longterm plans...oh well. #TrustInTre

Must of had to take Murphy in order to get Carolina to retain on Lack. Flames were never interested in him in the first place I guess

i liked the move yesterday, and after hearing the goalie analytic guy on the fan this morning, i like the move even more.
Key points he made:
- He was asked to change his playing style with the canes and it didn't seem to work at all for him
- the style he played wtih the canucks is quite close to smith, so the team won't have to change their play depending on who's playing goal that night
not to mention Gulutzan has a history with lack when he was a serviceable goalie with the canucks.
At the acquisition cost, not sure what's not to like here.... especially since he's pencilled in as the backup. Gulutzan did mention that he thinks the target number for lack would be somewhere in the 20s as far as games played goes (barring injuries, hot/cold streak by either goalie, etc).

Lack could be a good pickup. He was excellent in Vancouver and was a huge reason why they even made the playoffs in 2015. Then he got traded to Carolina where they messed with his style and tried to make him play like Cam Ward which is the opposite of what he should be doing.
From what I understand he reverted more to his old style for the 16-17 season, but he had some injury troubles early one. Once he got back healthy in February, he was actually quite good to finish the year. Over the last 2 months of the season he managed a 7-4-2 record with a .922 sv%.
Worst case scenario you have an excellent AHL goalie on a pretty low salary but more likely a decent backup who's good in the room and in the community. As for best case scenario, if he can get back to what he was in Vancouver he could be a decent starter. He outplayed both Luongo and Miller in his time backing those guys up.

Minus a 10-12 game run, Chad Johnson was very average for this team last year. If Lack is somewhere in between the .895% - .922% guy the Flames will be just fine.

Curious as to what makes some people think that Kulak or Andersson are better qualified to be the Flames 5 or 6 D than him.
I'll take a swing at Murphy, as opposed to having the other two.

Likely, but the fact he was still part of a trade of any sort is astonishing.

FYI, looks like the butt punch was against Bollig, so we don't have to worry about any leftover bad blood in the room.
In fact, no one who was on the ice for the Flames is still here. Bollig, Jooris, Granlund, Potter, and Schlemko. I had completely forgot Potter even played for the Flames that year.

Were people not aware that Lack is certifiably insane? He once had a romantic dinner with a cardboard cutout of Ryan Kesler. He tried to goad Luongo into a goalie fight after they got traded to play into the media narrative about there being a controversy from Vancouver (leading to someone making a Frozen cover song about it). He had the Swedish Chef muppet prominently featured on his mask. He's Bryzgalov-level crazy.
