He'd be ideal, but evolving hockey predicts a 3 year deal at 4.6 for him. So might be hard to attract him without term unless you pay like 6 to get him.
Usually with one year deals you're looking at guys like Klingberg or Dumba. Someone coming off a rough season needing to reassert themselves. If you can find that player, give them a chance to play, than flip em. Tyson Barrie might fit the mold of guy needing to rebuild himself. But he might not be a guy that can be rebuilt to something a playoff team might trade for.

Nhl trade rumours is proposing a huby, pld swap.
Intriguing as center is absolutely a position of need. Both underperforming, both long term high dollar contracts.

Yes, Conroy explored the possibility of trading Markstrom if the right offer was made but he wasn't trying to actively get rid of him.
It's at a point now though where moving him would be just as beneficial to him as it would the team. He's not getting any younger and the team won't be contenders within the next two season either. And it gives Wolf an opportunity to take over the starting spot sooner than he would have if he backed up Markstrom and then took over.
|
I am not getting into that whole Holtz/Mercer fiasco again, but trading your #1 goalie to tells me he is rebuilding.
Like I said, this is a forced rebuild. I think once he realized he wasn't signing Lindholm and Hanifin, and teams being interested in Markstrom he was open to trading him. Don't think that was the plan going into the season.
Once you look at what is left after the trades, there is no one to retool around. Keeping Lindholm and Hanifin we are still in the same boat no one to retool around.

This has popped up a couple times. Flames do that trade in a heart beat. If it was my money I’d follow it up with a PLD buyout

Well PLD might fully bitch out to the point that you could terminate his contract with cause if he had to play in Calgary. So I'd do it!

PLD is absolute locker room cancer.
The guy couldn't be any less interested in hockey.
Hard pass, unless you are literally trading for him to buy him out and move on.
Bringing that guy into Calgary for more than a minute would be an absolute failure.

Th NTC kicks in next season so I imagine the Kings will be shopping him hard this summer. If there are any takers I imagine it would be Montreal.

It takes more than trading one player with term to be in rebuilding mode. So far he's traded all the players he would have most likely lost for nothing this summer. That's just smart asset management.
People will call it though whatever they want it to be.

That player was the MVP of our team, and the probably one of the biggest reasons we stayed in the race.
Anything coming back would not have helped us stay in the race.

Montreal does make sense. It's super risky at this point of their rebuild, but if LA retains $3m salary and doesn't expect anything back, it might not be a terrible risk to take with where they're at. I don't think LA trades him away though for nothing because of what they gave up for him, unless they've got a guy like Reinhart lined up to replace him.
Reinhart could be a really good fit on that team and fill the gap as Kopitar slows down.

It kind of can be both... and really, it started with the intention to quickly retool where they initially wanted to trade a couple of their free agents who wouldn't sign and resign the rest.
That didn't happen because they had a poor start to the year, so they had to trade all of them, which made for a longer retool. And if they trade Markstrom and Wolf and the other young guys don't take a big step -- and then Andersson and Sherangovich want out -- they're very much forced into a full rebuild even if they intended a quicker retool.

Yeah I don't like Huberdeau in this team but after watching Dubois float around and do nothing LA can keep him. He's a bum.

I don't disagree with either point. That's not the point I'm making though.
The team won't be a contender in the next two years. They have a young promising goalie set to take over in two years anyway. If a team is willing to give you a young asset in a deal that can play in the NHL now and help fill holes you have even if it takes a couple of years you atleast consider it.
Trading one player with term doesn't mean you've gone into a rebuild. Whether you're rebuilding or retooling depends on what your focus is. We won't really have a clearer picture what direction Conroy is going until this summer.

Trade 1 with Detroit...
Wings get: Andersson
Flames get: 14th overall, Wallinder
Trade 2 with NJ...
NJ gets: Markstrom w/retention, 14th OA
Flames get: 10 OA, '25 first round w/protection
Flames draft Iginla and Yakemchuk and add another 20 something d man to the who knows pile.
