If you're gonna do a world cup, do it like they do in soccer.
I would just use the World Championship results from earlier that year to decide the 8 competing. Anyone who makes the quarter finals is invited to that Septembers World Cup.
As an example using last Mays results, this last World Cup would have consisted of,
Canada
USA
Russia
Czech
Sweden
Finland
Germany
Denmark
Someone mentioned it already but I like the idea of some unknowns going and catching the spotlight for a brief moment. That's what the Olympics are about to me, recognition of people who aren't professionals and catch a brief moment of glory to reflect how hard they've worked on their craft. Like mogul skiers or bobsledders.
Sidney Crosby has enough fame and money, let some amateurs have their shot at some olympic glory

I think there's only more organization in the world more corrupt than the IOC and that's FIFA. Neither of those organization has a cash flow problem. If the IOC wants NHL players at the Winter Olympics, it's time to cough up some cash.
Why does there have to be something in it for the NHL?
It's the ####ing Olympics.
The NHL is stopping it's season in the dead middle of it, and they shouldn't get anything out it (not even media), and assume the risk (injured players which likely will happen) all to appease the IOC?
That's just stupid. The NHL has participated enough that any gains from fan exposure isn't enough at this point. They need more than that.
The World Cup can easily fill in the void of the Olympics, and the NHL (and NHLPA) gets perks out of it. It's the same thing in the end, best versus best. It'll take a while to get to the prestige the Olympics built, but it's definitely achievable.

This sucks. I totally could have gone to see some of those games. Get your **** together IOC and NHL. Get it all together. Get it in a bag... or whatever, just get it together. Get all your **** and put it in a pile and take it down to the **** store. Get it - get it all together.

Sad day. As far as hockey competitions go the Olympics has always been the pinnacle for me. I'll hold out hope for a last ditch effort to right this wrong.
I have a hockey fanatic friend that only got into watching the NHL because she watched the Olympic hockey.
I think Bettman and the owners underestimate what the Olympics can do for the NHL.
I agree with this. There is a lot of sports patriotism that arises during the Olympics, and hockey is arguably the headlining event.
I also agree with the post which noted (paraphrasing) that some of the great Canada Cups involved a lot more of Canada vs. national programs and the increased number of international NHL stars keeps the dynamic of that era firmly in the past.
The NHL simply can not manufacture as significant a patriotic context with their own standalone tournament.
And the novelty teams threw that even further out the window.
Not a fan of Bettman or the owners, but I can understand their position in regards to no help from the IOC.
For myself, at the end of the day I'm more of a Flames fan than a Team Canada fan even with say, Dougie on the squad.
And I'm DEFINITELY more of a Flames fan than a Team USA fan even with Johnny and Tkachuk on it.
Maybe my NHL allegiances/dislikes are stronger than my Patriotism. I remember in 2010 at the height of my Canuck hate, being disinterested in Team Canada because of Luongo.(I still claim to this day we won in spite of him, not because of him) And as I type this, the thought of having to cheer for McJesus in a Maple Leaf at the Olympics doesn't appeal to me one iota.
