No way the Wild get equal value for Rossi today.

I think his value is somewhere in between the Flames pick and the Canucks pick some like 18-19th overall.

People keep saying this, but I can't see a single reason why Minnesota would move him. It's not like they're loaded at center.

And he's one of the shrimpiest shrimpy centers in the league. A thing that is more important at the center position than not.

I’ve never liked Kotkaniemi - Montreal took him ahead of Brady Tkachuk and Quinn Hughes, so he’s a cautionary tale of fixating on a centre at the top of the draft.

Carolina acquired the player largely out of spite, and his extension reeks of hedging.

But I don’t mind being paid to take him as a reclamation project on a rebuilding team that lacks centre depth - whatever we feel about him, Kotkaniemi can play centre in the NHL.

I believe they are considering it. They have soured on him somewhat. It doesn't mean they'll give him away. It's like Chicago and Dach.

Arguably better than Dach was when he was traded and he was traded for a 13th and a 66th. I think the Wild hang up the phone if the offer is 28 straight across for Rossi.

No not really.
He is careful to distinguish between things he has intel on v. speculation he is musing on.
Listeners just seem to struggle telling the two apart.

Why are the Wild trading Rossi?

If Rossi is worth the 9th OV pick then Minnesota would have no reason to trade him.

28th is probably not enough but I don't see them getting a top 20 pick. Probably will be like a 1st + 2nd of value.

I'd 100% take Kotkaniemi ... especially if a sweetener was involved. He's still a 6'2" center who will just turn 24 and IMO that contract won't look bad at $4.8M when the cap is at $95M in a couple years.

His first two seasons in Carolina people were talking about the steps he'd taken and how he was progressing, he had 43 in 22/23, and a slight step back isn't unheard of at that age.

Individual shooting % dropped from 14% in both 21/22 and 22/23 to 9.4% in 23/24. PDO was down around .983. But his underlying numbers remain strong. I'd have no issue with taking the risk of that contract on to get a former top 5 pick who at worst could be a 3rd line center for the team for $4.8M long term and locked up from 24-30 years old.

Especially if Kotkaniemi is thought to have negative value and you can get a sweetener back.

They don't want to wait for him to develop into what they think he could be. They want a top center right now.

Due to the contract structure the sweetener probably wouldn't be big.

It's $8.9M of real money savings and saves the Hurricanes about $0.9M of cap space for 12 years.

But Dundon doesn't like to spend money and spending a 2nd even instead of that $9M might be worth it to him

The Flames had to pay Montreal a 1st to take Monahan.

Kotkaniemi is signed for 6 more years - it’s going to take at least that for Carolina to rid themselves of him.

Rossi isn’t getting a low 1st ++

Vancouver + prospect at best.

I’ve actually read a rumour or two linking Rossi to the Flames. Necas too.

On Kotkaniemi- he’s still only 23, and if the cost to aquire him is little or nothing, we should absolutely be looking at him. He still has a ton of potential.

Being in on Necas and Rossi is just good due diligence.

They fit the age range and upside you're looking for. That "thrive with a better opportunity" circumstances that Connie likes to exploit.

Yup, I suspect the team will be in most rumors this offseason.

Mayhaps a package of Kotka and Necas can happen. That'd really change the dynamic of the FW group whilst keeping the team age average down and building towards being competitive long term.

Depends on where the Hurricanes current POV of Kotkaniemi is at the moment but taking him like we did Kuzmenko in Necas deal could mitigate the cost of acquisition from the canes.

Carolina has no incentive to do that though.

They will just buy him out and pay the $800k or so for the 12 years.

Trying to attach him to Necas is probably more likely, and Flames should be all over that
