Attracting and graduating trades people across the board is 100% vital to our economy and needs to be accelerated, waiting a few days for a plumber or HVAC or whomever really isn't the situation. It's how a lack of skilled labour hit's the economy and adds time, cost, complexity and more. This country has aspirations to triple/quadruple it's annual housing supply in short order. We are going to take homes/condos that are already slapped together quickly in garbage fashion and than proceed to accelerate that. Great!
As for the oncologist shortage and overall shortage of medical professionals in this country, Alberta and Canada as a whole need to wake up and quit the games. Amateur hour is over or at least it should be. I know this is a Alberta thread and the AB Govermnet's past and present have been absolute disasters in this regard, so has the federal government. We need medical dollars spent and we need mass amounts. The Canadian premiers were asking for something around $35-40 billion in NEW EXTRA money, the feds offered 10% of that. Jokers all of them.
Every medical specialist in Canada knows the Toronto God complex that occurs in that city with specialists. If your in Toronto and from there, your ok a lot if times. If your not? Your screwed. Your a specialist who run's multiple departments and top of class in your field in any major city in Canada? Odds are you may qualify for effectively a dishwasher job in your specialty in Toronto, not much more.
I am dating a top oncologist at the moment, one that has such extensive training internationally and in the US on advanced treatments. Treatments so advanced, they are not available in Canada, only G7 nation that doesn't have them. Why? Because Canada is a joke in this regard and it's well known. I am acutely aware of all these issues.
Nothing like getting recruited hard in the US and in Europe for substantially more money from top cancer centers globally, but struggle to get an interview in Calgary/ Red Deer, AB or in small town Ontario. Toronto won't even bother responding.

Totally agree with you on this. (Imagine that )
Unfortunately our representatives would rather keep people riled up over something they likely can’t change instead of actually coming up with ways to get a greater benefit out of the existing system.

We only need stage 4 oncologists in this province; the other stage oncologists can leave for all I care.

As I said before, we need to compensate the oncologist to retain and recruit more of them. I also mentioned the calling for trades People is also important. Am I missing something? I mean I’ve been pretty straightforward.

Where does one find single, female oncologists? I think Curves has the right idea in grabbing a romantic partner with a hedge for any future cancer diagnosis.

David parker is...something. Posted this on twitter.
There are 68,000 active members of the Canadian military.
There are 30,092 active members of the RCMP.
That is the entire force that the Canadian government can bring against its citizens.
If there ever is a people’s revolution, the Canadian government doesn’t stand a chance.
There are 4 million gun owners in Canada.

No mention of all the municipal police personnel. I wonder why?
And why does he think all 4 million gun owners would be on his side?

Probably the Tom Baker center although being forthright isn’t always the best strategy.
I’ve told several cops that you can’t spell DUI without you and I. That joke didn’t land.

She's in Alberta because she is from here, has her family and friends here. She spent some time in the US working on advanced treatments and training and working at various highly respected cancer centers.
She is getting offers all the time to move to other provinces and the US, as are a lot of specialists in Canada. It's becoming more and more appealing.
Personally I think one of the reasons why the federal government has somewhat paused the capital gains inclusion rate to 2/3 and not included it in the actual budget, is because of concerns with medical professionals. There could be some internal polling indicating a shocking amount of Dr's may leave Canada or retire early if this get's implemented or if there are not additional carve outs. Health care is a serious concern for Canadians and it's getting worse while we are going into an election year soon.
As for the quip about my grammar, thanks for that. It used to be better but has fallen off in recent years. As for my "inside knowledge" of things, I enjoy watching and reading a lot about news. Debate, present and discuss topics on this board like everybody else.

Anyone see David Parker cite the number of gun owners as a call to war with the government. Someone tweeted a screen shot of Parker’s threat but I can’t find it.

I've been weighing whether or not I wanted to step into a healthcare debate on the internet since I'm pretty bias myself (my position is Ph.D required in cancer healthcare, but not front line facing. If you want a quick description, imagine an oncologist wanting to treat a patient with radiation. We "make their wishes come true" by ensuring any treatments that are proposed are safe and deliver exactly what the oncologist requested).

One thing I think is lacking in this context is that it is not just Alberta/Canada. We're seeing a supply side shortage. As the initial link that sparked this discussion noted, we have been seeing more and more cases. The number I've seen internally is a doubling of demand going forward within our lifetime because of aging populations (cancer probability increasing with age) and increasing survivor rates from initial treatment (recurrences/progression). We simply do not have the staff levels to keep up with that.
The solution is likely multifaceted. Additional money can help locally, but we have to realize that all countries will likely have to figure out how to deal with a limited supply. Everyone dumping money in (likely gut response from every government) will not solve the problem. "True" solutions will have to tackle the number of oncologists trained since it's kind of hard to tell people "don't get cancer" outside of large systemic changes (e.g., reducing smoking in the population).
In terms of flow of employees in Canada, my field doesn't seem to have the same issue as most moves in this situation are for personal reasons more than salary (and rarely across borders). Maybe it's because of differences in field; the US staff in my field are given longer hours and paid approximately the same hourly as Canada when all is said and done. Maybe oncology is different, so I can't speak to that specifically.
