There are things about quantum mechanics and potentially dimensionality we don't understand. It's probably unwise to say that FTL communication is totally impossible. But impossible with our current understanding of physics and the universe.

Is it possible without violating causality in some way? Hm.

The thing about the warp drive is that it seems to preserve a universal frame of reference- in the show. I.e. if you drive away from earth at warp factor 9, turn around and drive back at warp factor 9 after a light year, you don't wind up at past earth (unless you also whip around the sun a few times on the way lol). This is not how it would theoretically work in real life, where indeed you could wind up backwards in time. But, wouldn't this be outside of your light cone? I don't know.

Or maybe, because you're creating a sort of singularity with the warp bubble, you could consider exiting the warp bubble as akin to exiting a black hole in another universe?

Huh, simulation is glitching as Space time just released a video on the link between this and entanglement yesterday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rogm_lpVZYU

I am going to watch it at lunch.

Agreed, at some point all of our laws of physics and general science will inevitably change or evolve.

While people consider the laws of physics to be absolute. There are subsets of those laws that change over time. Remember too that the universe is constantly changing, so that in itself will change reactions to the change.

I remember reading a popular mechanics article that talked about the universe itself being the key element of change and because the universe is not constant, it does force a evolution of the absolute laws.

Also the humans that are defining these laws are fallible. All it takes is a bad day after a night of vodka bombs for someone to forget to carry a 9.

Also remember that according to understanding, that cars at one time was an existential threat to survival because the human body couldn't maintain its cohesiveness if it travelled at greater then 50 mph.

Just finished Season 4. Again with some very strong episodes, including Family (the Picard winery), Reunion (the return of K'ehleyr and K'mpec), The Wounded (Cardassians!), Clues (makes no sense on re-watch but was pretty good at the time), Qpid (I am not a Merry Man!), The Drumhead, (a non-Trumpian witch hunt) and a great finale in Redemption.

Awesome guest stars again, with the return of Elizabeth Dennehy, George Murdock, Suzie Plakson and Tony Todd, as well as giving us David Ogden Stiers and Bob Gunton.

Other high points saw the making of O'Brien as an actual character, the expansion of the Klingon story and thus Worf's, the best Lwaxana episode (admittedly not a high-bar to clear). We see the Cardassians get introduced, as well as the Trill (although differently then they would show up on DS9), and the removal of Wesley, who I liked as a kid, but he was so snotty in his final episode as a regular. Also the introduction of Lursa and B'etor, who would go on to last as villians until Generations.

Low points included one last Wesley-saves-the-day, a bit of a let-down to THe Best of Both Worlds, and the introduction of both Alexander and Sela.

I was hoping in the future that they would make O'Brien into a serial killer.

Pretty much the lowest ranked guy on the ship, stuck in the tranporter room by himself. Asked to scrub Barclay DNA out of the holodeck emitters.

Sela as a low point is a bit of a shock. I thought they did a great job with that.

Sela itself was a fine idea. The execution, namely in that they did nothing with her after this and Unification, is a whole other thing.

I had a client come in, who knows I'm a Star Trek fan (if you've ever been to my office its not exactly a secret) and asked me about the latest season of Discovery.

"Did you know they really dont develop or involve much of the rest of the crew?"

Are they still doing that?? They identified the St. Burnham problem something like 4 years ago and what? Just shrugged their shoulders and soldiered on?

No. I havent noticed because I havent watched an episode of STD in years.

I don't know man, Tilly was heavily involved in the last episode, so you know it was a banger.

I'll take your word for it. I dont think I could pick out Tilly from a Police Lineup.

"Which one is Tilly? I dont know. Not that one, that one is Mike."

Only Burnham can make them feel good about themselves by her accomplishments.

I gotta tell ya...I'm no fan of STD but since its a prequel and Star Trek has notoriously made Kirk a Hero of the Federation, I am interested in seeing how, after all of her miraculous accomplishments, her relationship to Spock and ergo Sarek, how this amazing, heroic, magical and mystical Michael somehow vanishes from the history books.

Starfleet personnel talk about Kirk and Picard like they're Gods...no mention of Mikey though.

Does she wear Air Jordans? Inquiring minds must know!

I still cringe at the idea of Tilly teaching at Star Fleet Academy, I can see her lessons.

1) If your in a situation where there's a countdown clock, or oxygen is leaking out of the ship at a dangerous rate, make sure you call a staff meeting and tell all of your people that you love them. Don't worry about the ticking time bomb, or the fact that people can't breath in a vacuum, double down on the Staff Meeting love.

2) If your in command of the ship and in a major battle, make sure you call a staff meeting and call a vote so you can give up command while the ship is exploding around you.

3) When you encounter a genocidal maniac who likes eating people from a mirror universe make sure you describe her with the following terms "She's a total bad ass", or "She did things her way and that's awesome".

I can just see her students after a week saying "Ignore everything she's teaching, she's clearly an idiot".

Tilly is just like the worst character. The other funny thing, is that the new first officer, Burnham makes this passionate speech about how he needs to get to know the crew on a personal basis. Hell multiple seasons in and I don't even know anything about most of the bridge crew except they occupy seats and jam buttons, while Tilly screams "Science F yeah in the background"

And I laughed when they finally found a way to have two universe saving Burnhams in one episode. I almost think it was a deliberate backhanded slap at the people that can't stand Burnham.

Thanks to Tilly, Wesley is no longer the most annoying Star Trek character.

I mentioned this before but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that a military/exploration vessel would have so many anxiety ridden, command questioning and mentally unstable crew members. I get that it's supposed to make them more interesting characters but it makes me question the hiring practices of the Federation.

On TNG you believed any one of the main cast members could take over command of the ship if they had to. Some less successfully than others but if I were an ensign I wouldn't worry as much as I would if Tilly suddenly sat in the chair. Even Troi had her chance and did a fine job.

I guess it helped that they built each character up over many seasons so we knew that, while they had flaws, they were all capable officers.
