Off-season Thread
We will use this thread to track various activities for our off-season.
Effective immediately trading can resume. However, we are finished well ahead of the NHL season so it will be some time until re-rates are out. Teams can trade players and make decisions without those new ratings just know that it is both an opportunity and a risk – as your expected rating may differ from what is in the package. But projecting this is part of the fun of the off-season.
Note that when we start to review potential re-rates the commissioners will be under a trade freeze. We will let the league know when this is happening. My intent is to use the same package as this year if it’s available.
Note that one thing I intend to figure out in the off-season is why injuries were almost non existent in the sim this year. It would not have been fair to adjust things mid-stream but I’ll tackle that during the summer.
I need volunteers for the following. If people who have done these tasks in the past want to do them again, they are more than welcome to do so.
- Someone to maintain and update the draft pick list
- Someone to do the same for UFAs
Here is the order I expect things to be in, at this stage. Again please appreciate the fluidity of everything so this may change.
- Resumptions of trading: Can start now. Please remember to update any draft picks exchanged in the thread, once it is created.
- Rollover (TBD when Cam can do it and once the UFA and Draft Pick threads are created: 1 year advancement on ages and contracts)
- Releasing of players: Once the rollover is done. NOT before.
- Draft Lottery: TBD. I have a business trip this upcoming week so I will schedule it when I get back. But I want to do it soon. We will run the lottery through the excel tool I created. We will do it on zoom so people can witness the “draw”.
- Our draft: Saturday June 22nd, 10 am Calgary time. Remember the draft is only 4 rounds this time.
- Re-rates and new RFA/UFA grids (if re-rate packages are available earlier we will pull this ahead of the draft)
- RFA re-signing
- UFA re-signing
- UFA batches
A couple of immediate actions/reminders
- MOST IMPORTANT: If you are unsure if you wish to remain GM of your team please let us know sooner rather than later. It is only fair to the new GM that they have the off-season to prepare their team
- If you have any questions about rules, please ask
- Remember you do NOT need cap space to sign RFAs but you DO need cap space to sign your UFAs. And all UFAs re-signed are 3 years and 1 way. You cannot trade UFA rights. You must re-sign them or not sign them.
- Once releases are permitted (after the rollover), if you release a player please post in the free agency thread.
- If you trade or acquire a draft pick please post in the draft pick thread
- You an email cphltrade any conditions that need to be deleted
Immediate things you should be doing:
- Prepare for the draft
- If you owe conditional picks in the 2024 draft – take care of them sooner rather than later
- Update your trade block
- If you have players on one way contracts down in the AHL, bring them back up to the CPHL, otherwise you won’t be able to submit UFA offers even for your own players
- Activate any players on the IR
- Trade, trade, trade!
Couple other things
- You may not sign any free agents that are in the system already. The only ones you can re-sign are ones that aren't in the DB at all that you request to be added
- The watchdog is off its leash. You do not need to be roster or cap compliant in the off-season. Per above, you do need cap space to re-sign or sign a UFA
If anything is unclear PLEASE ask questions.

Like every year...This tends to be most important for JH to manage.

How are folks coming along on the draft/UFA list.
I'd like to schedule the lotto but can't do that until we have the list.

Sorry I have questions on these items.
How do we sign our pending UFA players?
How do I know what picks I owe if any ?
Is the cap off during the offseason to call players up?

that will be one of the offseason items that will happen once we have re-rates. First we re-sign RFAs, then UFAs according to the grids provided by the league. But don't worry, there'll be threads explaining everything when it happens.

on your team site, conditional picks should be noted between your NHL and AHL teams (above your draft picks, the conditions that start with "Special:"). There's quite a few on your team, it seems like

yes. You'll still get watchdog mails if you violate the cap, but you can ignore them during the offseason.

In case there is confusion with any of the GMs, players with a 1 way contract can not be sent to the AHL

That's what I thought so wasn't sure why some would be calling them up.

You might ask, what are these grids. Basically, a spreadsheet that will tell you what a players will make based on their OV rating. RFA's you can choose to sign for 1, 2 or 3 years. UFA's, you need to sign for 3 years at the listed value. UFA's that do not get signed through the grid process are open for bidding. Jiri will start a thread for that. If you want, I have last year's grids if you want to have a look? Just PM me if you want them.

Finishing the pick list right now. Two questions.
1) We're not doing the fifth round anymore as of this year, correct?
2) How should I handle Ottawa's compensatory pick(s)?

1. Correct. Gone.
2. They should be added at the end of each round. Note those picks cannot be traded.

How will we handle traded 5th round picks then?
For instance I had acquired a 5th in a deal before the rule has been changed. Will we get an extra pick at the end of the 4th round?

They are all gone.
ultimately everyone loses their 5ths. Those teams that chose to hang on to theirs lose them as do those teams that traded for them.
You could make the argument that you should keep that acquired 5th because you traded for it, but I don't see that any differently from a team that chose NOT to trade them.
So they all go.

Another question — Can I get compensatory picks for being a bad GM?

That seems weird. If a team has a couple of 5th round picks (their own and an acquired one) as opposed to one, they traded something in order to get that. I see the logic of if they only have an acquired one, because they traded their one away, so it is a wash.
In the end it isn’t a huge thing I get it, but it definitely doesn’t feel like an equitable solution. The way I think it should be (and I believe we had discussed this when the rule change had also been proposed) is if a team has an extra 5th, they should get the pick at the end of the 4th round.
Magic beans can grow something. I don’t want to miss out on a Cameron whynot.
