One has to wonder why a guy being backed by the UCP would want to be continually creating distractions

Serious question here. What stops someone from paying the $500 and then just not collecting any signatures? Seems like a pretty cheap insurance policy for an elected official. Mayor Gondek could have had her husband pay the $500 fee and then not collect any signatures. My understanding is that they can only face on recall petition per election cycle.

If that’s possible, it’s a loophole that needs to be remedied.

Not really, the whole legislation is pointless anyway. You could murder someone and be found guilty and you’d never get 40% of the electorate.

I think maybe a notorious mass murder event you might be able to get 40% if it was really scandalous.

I doubt it. Voter turn out in 21 was 46%.
And that’s with the resources of elections Calgary to organize and advertise. Even motivated I just don’t see you rallying people.

I wish you could do a parlay on the over on those 2025, 2026 rates. I'd bet everything I own on it being an over. I actually don't know what parlay means and I probably used it in the wrong context.

We're heading into election years here. They'll be held as much as humanely possible.

Speaking of betting, anyone want to take a bet that the UCP will change the recall legislation to make it way easier to succeed? Like whatever Johnson got rounded up to the nearest 5000.

But only for municipal politicians, not for premiers and MLAs.

I would immediately start one for Dan McLean if they did that. UCP would change their tune pretty quick if it gets used on one of their own

Do one anyway. He’s part of that group of do-nothing block heads that is more popular than he should be.

There seems to be a series of things Marlaina and the UCP are doing to ensure their brand of politics apply to the municipal level:
- political parties for municipal elections (even though the vast majority of Albertans oppose this);
- consult the 'council of the defeated' in Edmonton; punish Edmonton by pausing their much needed hospital and building in Red Deer;
- inserting themselves between municipalities and federal funding (Bill 18);
- reviewing and redo-ing research grants for universities to 'add more conservatism'
- Get Red Deer to 1M metropolis
She even said political parties are needed at the municipal level because 'Calgary and Edmonton'.
When you don't win the game, you change the rules to tilt in your favor. Danielle's big city strategy in a nutshell. And build a new big city if the current ones don't support you politically.

I would be stunned to see the increases that low. This council has shown no propensity to do that so far, but I guess I could be pleasantly surprised.
