Default Anyone Lactose Intollerant?

So this girl that I've been dating is lactose intollerant. No dairy products.

Her birthday is coming up so I wanted to see if anyone here knew of any places where I could get some good chocolate, or even baked goods that don't have dairy in them. Maybe there is a specific place that caters to people with allergies...

Also, can ayone reccomend some good soy cheeses?

I think I am, but my doctor thinks it's more IBS.

Dark Chocolate is the way to go. If they don't like it yet, they will when they can't handle milk chocolate. You should be ok with milk products in baking, cause the heat breaks down the lactose to a point that it doesn't bother most intollerants.

I haven't found anything that caters to people like me, so I'm interested as well, but there is always options.

As far as the cheeses, don't look in the dairy isle. Head to the deli of your supermarket. That's where they usually keep the soy cheese. If you can't find it, ask someone in that department.

I hope this helps...

I am lactose intolerant, but not to the point where even small amounts would make me get the runs, I can't have ice cream, milk or chocolate milk, but a slice of cheese is ok.

It really depends on HOW lactose intolerant she is... I know someone who is so bad he couldn't even take Mayonnaise.

But I'd go with prottotype about the soy cheese and such.

Mayo isn't dairy I thought. I have problems with it, but it's the egg in it. But I could be wrong.

Yeah, she's pretty lactose intollerant. Even just a little bit of butter will really upset her stomach. Ice cream, milk and regular cheese? Forget about it.

Any specific soy cheeses you like?

Health food stores are a great place to start. Places like Community Natural Foods and Amaranth Whole Foods Market. They have baked goods as well as dairy free chocolate (often made with carob . .. . the chocolate bars are actually quite good). Also, if you want to go for dinner there’s a place called Buddha’s Veggie . . . Chinese cuisine . . . they are totally veggie and also cater to food sensitivities (they use no dairy, msg, etc) you have to try to see what you like there (some stuff is fantastic some not) but the Won Ton Soup (107), Sprin Rolls (312), Dumplings (304), Veggie Ginger Beef (424), Shrimp and Chashews (430) are all really good! (even big meat eaters tend to love this place).

Hope this helps.

Also, a suggestion might be to make her something. Perhaps an entire cake is too ambitious for you, or so you think, but here's a great Vegan Chocolate Cake (No dairy, no eggs), that is pretty damned easy to make, and, I guarantee, you'll get HUGE points for it.

Girls LOVE cake.

Especially if you use half a cup of oil instead of 3/4's. Then it's "low fat"!

er, forgot the link

Try Lakeview Bakery in the south, there is another specialty bakery up in the north, the name escapes me.

You could just give her some lactaid pills/drops for her birthday, then go nuts gorging yourselves at dairy queen!

Yeah we actually tried that once before. Those pills don't work too well...

Yeah... there's a common misconception about the 'pills'.

They basically override the digestive system, for lack of a better discription. So people who are lactose intollerant can enjoy dairy without the same symptoms, but the alternative isn't as enjoyable either.

Use your imagination.

I talked to my doctor about this, and the 'pills' aren't the greatest solution. Much easier to just avoid dairy all together, and be able to enjoy everything else I eat.

I did too. Probably due to all the mentios of Lacoste in the ebay thread.

Seriously at $90 for a polo who isn't Lacoste intolerant?

There's a bakery on Centre and...26th? North that does dairy and gluten-free stuff. I'm not lactose intolerant, but I walk by it a lot.
