Could Calgary trade for New Jersey Devil's 2nd overall pick?
So there have been some rumours that New Jersey Devils might be interested in trading away their 2nd overall pick (for 2022 draft) in exchange for a winger...
Do you think Calgary should make a big trade to get that 2nd overall pick? The only reason I'm asking is because I think it would be interesting (and maybe cool) to draft Logan Cooley in order to get a true 1-2 punch at centre (Lindholm-Cooley).
Also, how big should the package be to get that 2nd overall pick (dumping away bad contracts and maybe more picks or even some of our RFAs)?

If it’s 2nd overall and then some (as the article suggests) I think you do that deal every time. I imagine NJD would want some hope of re-signing him though, otherwise they could just potentially wait a year if they really wanted him

New Jersey acquires:
Matthew Tkachuk
Rights to Johnny Gaudreau
Jacob Markstrom (seriously, go look at their goalies. Yikes)
For
#2 OA
#34 OA
Alexander Holtz
Nico Hischier

The Devil's hang up. Johnny could still walk, Tkachuk can walk in a year.

Contingent of course on an extended Gaudreau and Tkachuk also agreeing to a long term deal - and why wouldn’t he at that point?

If NJ wanted to swing, they'd listen. Really depends on the next few weeks and the Flames mellowing out period.

NJ hopes to get an immediate impact player by trading the 2 OA pick, they aren’t moving Hischier.
Johnny is a UFA, he has no real value in a trade.
Now Marky would interest them for sure. But would he waive for NJ? He has a full NMC. And that would leave the flames without a goalie.
NJ’s plans might be to trade the 2OA for an established goalie and sign Johnny in UFA.

The deal that makes sense is the #2 overall pick, plus something of substance, for Matthew Tkachuk. Don't make it complicated.

I don't think Calgary has the assets to trade for NJ 2nd overall and Sutter isn't here for a rebuild.
If NJ get Gaudreau it will be via free agency (or for a late pick for negotiation rights right before free agency).

If you can grab yourself a future Nolan Patrick or Kappo Kakko or Patrik Laine or even the great Jack Eichel and all it costs you is a 100 point power forward, you do it every single time.

The reason you would trade Tkachuk is the same reason the Devils wouldn't trade for him.

Or Marcel Dionne, Shanahan, Marleau, Malkin, Sedins, Eric Staal, Bellows, Heatley, Yashin etc.
We have enough evidence of what Tkachuk does in the playoffs and there is an impending rebuild coming and the Flames don't have the team the way it is to win a cup. They just showed us.
If this is available, you pull the trigger. Gaudreau is probably going to walk anyway. I also don't think Tkachuk is a 100 pt player ever again, especially without Gaudreau, and his contract negotiation is going to be a nightmare, saddling you with a massive cap hit. Picked right, this pick will be getting the same number of points in 3 years for about 90% less cap hit.

You go back 51 years to find 9 players who may be able to compete with Tkachuk. Tkachuk is already a better player than Heatley or Yasmin, so that takes it down to 7. Dionne made the second round twice in his career, so if you are looking for playoff success he may not be your guy. And the number two pick will not get 100 points in his third year, I doubt the number 2 pick will get 100 points in his first 3 years after the draft let alone in one year.

Tkachuk is going to sign a massive long-term deal and then float around for the rest of his career. If you think he's going to hit 100 points again, especially without Gaudreau, you are delusional. Last year was Tkachuk's career high, time to cash in.
This is where the Flames screw up asset management, times like this and not leveraging the best years of its players to plan properly for the future.
Also no, Tkachuk has not yet proven he will get over 800 pts in his career so no, he's not better than Heatley or Yashin, but he has potential to be possibly. I predict in about 3 years, Tkachuk will be around a 60-70 pt player, and so will the 2nd overall pick. It's just the 2nd overall pick will not cost $8-$9MM more.

2020 clear cut #1 OA Alexis Lafreniere has 1 year left on his ELC and is a third line player on the Rangers.
He is a LW
Quinton Byfield 2020 #2 OA is the large centre the Flames need to build around. He was given 4th line minutes in the first 2 LA playoff games before being replaced by Rasmus Kupari.
Maybe LA would take Tkachuk for Byfield. Would the Flames be willing to wait a couple of years to see Byfield blossom. He isn't as impactful in his D+2 year as Tkachuk was in D+1 and D+2.

I would add Stutzle to the list to get all 3 top picks in 2020 as pieces the Flames could look at. I could see interest from all 3 of those teams. Rather not trade in division so the Rangers and Sens make more sense

I love how the negative crowd is always saying stuff like Gaudreau is probably going to leave anyway when everything points to the opposite.
