Less would be spent if they decide not to bid, but yes, it would be lost. It would go to paying the committee(s) in charge of the bid and associated support staff (this wouldn’t be a volunteer job), for the assessments, for any marketing, all the travel and fancy accommodation, etc.
If the city bids and it is only $30M then it’ll be newsworthy.

Is $30 million the expense required to organize a bit or an IOC fee? I'm not against the bid but I would love to hear why it should cost $30 million as that's a lot of money. Maybe there's merit because a lot of studies, estimations, planning need to be done but it would be nice to know where the $30 million goes.

What people forget about spending money is that it pays people's wages and goes back into the economy.
My whole life I've been hearing people moan about governments spending money and how it's going to ruin us and all that's ever come of it is I continue to live in one of the best countries in the world enjoying a decent quality of life, able to earn a living and raise my kids while the country continues to NOT go to hell in a handcart.

Well this is a great argument for the city paying for 100% of the Flames new arena.

If Calgary again, hosts the Olympics, I could do really well financially. For completely selfish reasons, I'm all for it.

I was referring to the cost of the bid, and I'm not arguing for anything, just commenting on the knee-jerk reactions against spending government money that I've been hearing my whole life. It's an Alberta thing I think.

I actually meant it’s funny when there are a multiple examples of the public having no idea what they’re talking about, and asking those people for input.
“Hey, we’re having Cheerios for breakfast.”
“I hate fruit loops, I wish we’d have Cheerios! I’m moving to a house that never has cheerios!”
Whining about Canadian debt while considering a move to an even more in-debt country?
It’s just lol.

Not really...it's probably a lot worse than dropping that same $400M in cash out of a helicopter.
At least most of the $30M will be going to individuals living/working in Calgary/Alberta.
A massive chunk of a $400M will pay for brick and mortar (and seats, and technology, and ice plants, etc.) sold by non-local companies. The biggest construction companies involved will probably not be locally headquartered. It may not be much more than $30M out of the $400M that would end up in the pockets of local individuals (construction, engineering, etc.)
No permanent new jobs are created either way.

I would absolutely love for Calgary to host the Olympics. I think it would a super cool thing to experience in the city seeing as I wasn't born in 1988.

Some of you are those cheap asses that Penny pinch and save all your lives only to die with a million dollars in the bank.

In fairness we aren’t talking pennies and millions here.
But I just can’t get enough of the logistical discussion in hosting that a bid proposal brings. Plus I’m really hoping for billions in provincial and federal spending on infrastructure that i cant help but be a booster because I’m selfish towards the city that way. No it’s not good for the general taxpayer but damned if I’ll pass up the opportunity for the rest of Alberta and the ROC to pay for our stuff!
I’m one of those “It had better cost billions” people, provided most of those billions are from other levels of government than the city.

Some of you are those losers who have no money that want the government to take care of them for ever.

I am for it. This is how the building gets done and I also look forward to other infrastructure upgrades that are sure to be fast tracked. This will also be beneficial to my work
