Francis: Will be shocked if Flames don't re-sign Chad Johnson in free agency
Eric Francis @EricFrancis
The Mike Smith trade does not preclude the #flames from signing Chad Johnson. In fact, I'd be shocked if the Flames don't re-sign the UFA.
given how Dreger and Shannon also kept mentioning that Johnson could be back with Calgary, I think someone in Flames management has signaled this.

Vegas can pick as many as six goaltenders in the expansion draft, so they'll likely be flipping a couple of them. They need 4 at the most. It'll be interesting to see if Treliving has a deal lined up with McPhee.

What does that have to do with Calgary signing Johnson as a UFA? I mean, you're not wrong, but I don't see how it relates.

We just made our big goalie trade. I think another goalie trade is unlikely.
Signing Johnson mades a lot of sense. You don't want to be one injury to Smith away from a Rittich/Gillies tandem in Calgary.

Let's also remember Arizona needs a capable backup for Louis Domingue. A veteran like Johnson would fill the bill.
Based on what the insiders and their GM said, it looks like Domingue will be a back up to whatever goalie the Coyotes acquire next (assuming he survives the expansion draft)

In his interview with flames tv when referring to Johnson Treliving did say something along the lines of "we'll see what happens in the future" take that for what it's worth
Kind of odd that the same day it's leaked that Johnson doesn't want back up money it's also leaked that it's very likely he re-signs with Calgary when free agency opens up. Yet also on that same day the Flames acquire a proven veteran starter with some of his salary/cap hit retained.
What is back up money anyways? I guess it's subjective, depending on who you ask.
Johnson made $1.7 million this season.
Are we supposed to read between the lines and expect Johnson to be signed July 1st for 1 or 2 years @ $2.0-2.5 million per? That would have the Flames paying $6.25-6.75 million per year against the cap for their goaltending the next year or two.
Or are 'leaky' people just talking out their asses?
Back up money is under $2 million to me. Johnson probably could get an offer of 2 years $2.25 from us. If Gillies or Rittich beat him out next camp he's trade bait.
Listening to Johnson on 960 this morning, I think it's unlikely he signs with the Flames. It sounds like he wants to be at least a 1B. He thinks he was last season and IMO he really wasn't. He played a tad more than a backup usually does but not by a long ways, and that was mainly because of Elliott's poor play off the hop and because he got on such a roll. Otherwise, it was clear he was a backup in the eyes of management and coaching.
This year, it's clear Smith is brought in because Treliving thinks there needs to be an established starting goalie - he wasn't interested messing with former backups or 1Bs that want more work. So that doesn't really fit with what Johnson says he wants.
