Deals like this remind me of the 2009 Flames Sutter era.
I'm going to miss seeing the Flames draft people in the second round (except the core is still much younger).
This move is, yes. But the team is nothing like the 2009 Sutter era. The core of the team is way, way younger and is very much on the upswing. Whereas that entire team's agenda was milking everything they could out of players that were on their last few prime years, a core revolving around one RW.
We have to take care of the two or so seasons until Parsons/Gillies are ready to play games somehow. Spending under 5 mil on a proven starter with two seasons remaining seems like the way to go. Would people rather give up much better assets to get MAF, who might not even be a better goaltender here? Some would love it initially, but we'd quickly learn that MAF doesn't have a lot on Smith or Elliott aside from the winning background. And two of the three cup teams he was a part of were won on the performance of Matt Murray.
That's actually about as fair of a trade as I think I've seen in a long time. Not sure if Smith is the answer or not but he's more reliable than anyone else we've had in a few years

I have no hope for this season. And honestly I'm beginning to doubt Treliving, if this is the best he can do. Hopefully he gets someone good as a backup and they steal the starting job?

The thing to remember is if the Flames make the playoffs it becomes a 2nd, but would be mid to late. If the Flames miss the playoffs it stays a 3rd but it is early to mid.
So the difference in actual pick slot could be pretty small.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

15.10 were low danger (Saved 98.01% vs. League Avg of 97.91%)
10.83 were medium danger (Saved 92.61% vs. League Avg of 92.50%)
8.45 were high danger (Saved 83.73% vs. League Avg of 81.17%)
Brian Elliott faced on average:
27.81 shots against per game last season
13.01 were low danger (Saved 97.82% vs. League Avg of 97.91%)
8.28 were medium danger (Saved 93.84% vs. League Avg of 92.50%)
6.52 were high danger (Saved 79.13% vs. League Avg of 81.17%)
Now that's finalized, I expanded on the above numbers.
Smith was above league average in all three categories, while facing more shots per game than any other goalie
Smith was better than Elliott in high danger and low danger save %
Elliott was below league average in high danger and low danger save%

Sorry I was not following the Hickey situation. Why was he not willing to sign in CGY? Money?
No reason given. Treliving on 960 said they were actively trying to sign him in April and hoped to have him signed soon, but then a week later he was named captain of the BU terriers for next season.
