Seattle: KeyArena renovation deal. NHL expansion bid not far behind?

Hollywood film producer Jerry Bruckheimer and billionaire investment banker David Bonderman are joining the Oak View Group’s efforts to renovate KeyArena for NBA and NHL use.
The addition of Bonderman and Bruckheimer, to be announced at a news conference at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at KeyArena, provides the strongest signal yet that OVG intends to bring an NHL team to Seattle near-term and an NBA team further down the road. Bonderman has been a minority owner of the Boston Celtics for more than a decade, and Bruckheimer is a close acquaintance of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and has long expressed a desire to become a franchise owner.
“These are the real deal,” OVG chairman Tim Leiweke said in an interview. “And they will join us and help us in pursuing an NHL and an NBA franchise.”
Leiweke repeated his long-held stance of not wanting “to get ahead of league commissioners” until they are ready to offer up teams. But he said the presence of Bonderman and Bruckheimer as “equal partners” in OVG’s renovation effort will leave his group positioned to take advantage of any new opportunities.
The NBA is believed to be five to 10 years from expansion. But the NHL, which will launch a new Las Vegas franchise this fall, has an imbalance between its Eastern and Western conferences and could even things out by adding a Seattle franchise in the near term.

Both Bonderman and Bruckheimer are expected to announce soon their intention to attract an NHL expansion franchise to be an anchor tenant in the facility, according to a source close to the project.

I think they plan on spending pretty well new-arena money and I think it has to do with location as well as the fact they want to keep with the existing design because it's iconic to the city. I imagine the finished product would look like basically a new arena.

$564 million for a remodel. You'd think it would be cheaper to just tear the old building down and build a new one on the land.
The new SoDo arena was budgeted at $550 million five years ago.

On the other hand, this being Seattle, the old building might fall down in the time it takes to get approval to build a new one. Nobody can reasonably object to building an arena inside the shell of this building, because it already is an arena.

I can dig it. The east/west will need to be balanced and the west could geographically use a couple more teams sprinkled in. Enough of these borderline eastern teams residing in the western conference.
It makes travel in the west a tiny bit closer (esp those in the PAC) with more teams up and down the coast. And Vancouver won't be quite as isolated.

I imagine another expansion team is coming, but I am not looking forward to that at all.
Next time around we are probably going to take it right up the hoop in the expansion draft and it will be right in the middle of our contention window.

Why would the next expansion draft be worse than this one?

Looking forward to it.
The SoDo area is more an industrial one, so Key may prove to be a better proposition for people before and after games. There's already plenty of construction around the area.
Plus, the city needs to keep an area like SoDo as is so that fledgling businesses can actually afford rent somewhere.
As for the region, I could see a pretty healthy rivalry with the Canucks develop rather quickly. The fans in this city are actually rather passionate, so there will be plenty of enthusiasts. However, I have a big worry about ticket prices and what that does to the mix of fans turning out for games.

..because in my opinion, the next expansion draft (if it's in a couple years from now) won't see us losing a veteran depth player like Stajan/Bouma/Brouwer or unproven prospect like Shinkaruk/Kulak but a much more desirable young asset.

Somebody on the radio this AM (some insider - I was only half-listening while driving) mentioned that Bettman had been prepared to let the Coyotes move to Seattle even without the arena rebuild, but that it fell through at the time because of ownership. Hence, now, my question above...

If the Flames have more than 11 desirable young assets on the roster a couple of years from now, it will be a miracle – and they'll have the depth to stand losing one of them.
The only way the team loses a key player is if the size of the protected list is sharply reduced from 7 F + 3 D + 1 G, and I don't see that happening.
The rules this time around are only as generous as they are because the league was demanding $500 million for a franchise, and nobody was going to pungle unless they got some kind of value for money.
Even at that, the Vegas group was the only one with a viable bid. It may be a long time before we see another prospective owner with an arena deal and half a billion dollars to burn. We may never see one who's willing to spend enough money to get the existing owners to agree to lose core talent.

Man I can't wait to watch the flames play in Vancouver, Seattle, and Vegas soon. Instead of always watching them lose in Anaheim.
