The health of the CFL needs to improve a lot before it makes sense to invest in a new stadium. League attendance is down, TV ratings are down, and the next generation is only going to care less about it.

The committee that's investigating the feasibility of a bid has a report due to Council in July. There isn't really much to talk about until then.

I wonder if they couldn't have some upper level concourse & services over Olympic Way and use those two small lots on the west side as well.

the football stadium ship has sailed...after the backlash the Flames have received lately why bother. CFL isn't a great investment for anyone, if I were the Flames I would get rid of the Stamps. City can deal with MS falling apart right after they clean up the contaminated land

Arena plan B proposed for parking lots north of Stampede Park
Quote:
In recent months, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corp., city hall administration and the city’s land developer have met more than 25 times to discuss an alternative to the hypothetical CalgaryNEXT project that’s faced hurdles since renderings and details were made public in August 2015.
The substitute plan for an arena in Victoria Park, on a two-block site south of 12th Avenue S.E. between Olympic Way and 5th Street S.E. on land currently occupied by parking lots and roadways, “appears feasible to all involved parties,” according to a report scheduled to go before city council on Monday.
The “Victoria Park option report,” which council will debate next week, is meant to inform the public and council on the work to date and serve as a starting point for public discussions about Plan B.
The report doesn’t include renderings, or information about cost or funding, and city administration refused to answer questions about the report ahead of Monday’s meeting.

As far as I know, nothing is being presented other than the report that sureLoss posted earlier.
Council will discuss that and decide where to go from there.

Your seats will very likely be the same size as they are now. You'll still wait in long lines at concessions and washrooms. The concourses will be bigger but guess what - when 18,000 people are trying to leave the arena its still going to be jammed. And you'll pay 50-60% more for this.
Now if you're a rich guy with a suite, a Flames player or staff member or even better yet a Flames owner, you're coming out ahead (although the suite guys will be paying up as well) but the rest of you will get nothing out of this.

The U of C owns McMahon Stadium so the City doesn't really have anything to do with that facility. If it were any level of government responsible, it would be the provincial government.

unless they are considering an Olympic bid, or care at all about being the only city of their size in NA without a proper large football/event stadium
anyway, if I'm the Flames owners I pull my money out

We lost the Cannons because nobody wanted to spend money on a stadium, now there is people here who want to ride the Stampeders out of town because, having a football stadium is a waste of time and now we have the oldest arena in the NHL. Are we a world class city of over a million people or are we some dirt road frontier village, where you only stop for gas and stare at the inbred locals. Chew on this Calgary, both Edmonton and Winnipeg, the left and right armpit of North America, have facilities that blow ours out of the water. Thank God we have the U of C or we would be in same category as Toledo, or even Hamilton...oh that's right even Hamilton has a new stadium

The Cannons left because other teams owners were pissed off at the extra travel up into Canada same thing happened to Edmonton Trappers 2 years later they were forced out of the PCL with a newer stadium good thing Calgary did not waste money on one, as far as new rink and football stadium no reason why this city can't find a way to do both , but they should be stand alones imo.

How much is a triple A baseball team worth?
The stamps are the 3rd healthiest team in the league. The league will fail before the stamps do regardless of the Arena situation. A new CFL arena costs about 200 million at a 30 yr life and 10 games per year that's 600k per game not counting the time value of money.
As for the NHL stadium the owners have stated they were willing to kick in 450 million as part of Calgary Next. The good news is that is sufficient to build a Arena.

The ability to use CRL funds on infrastructure linkages, as well as the land not being horribly contaminated, are probably the strongest parts of Plan B.

There is a beautiful American Elm tree in the north parking lot, get ready for the hippies to chain themselves to it to save it.
