for everyone who just got their modem, are they handing out brand new boxes or are they refurbs? the Cisco I got earlier this year was a bit used and crusty, so I'd prefer to have some unbesmirched hardware this time around.

The Hitron models they're giving out are new. I don't think they have any more of the new Cisco models to give out, so I don't know if they're new or refurbs.

Sales girl for me asked if I was using my own router, and she said no prob it will be bridged. Maybe there is just inconsistency in the terms used

Well none of my telus boxes were wireless anyhow so no big deal, and I had a mix of them running on cat5 and coax

I just upgraded to Internet 150. I have the Hitron modem/router.
Speedtest shows 152 Mbps download and 15.9 upload.

Just an update for anyone who might be experiencing my issue as well. Shaw tried to figure out what was going on with the modem on their end, but everything looked good, signal was strong etc. They are actually going to have to send a tech out to see why my connection can't break 90 Mbps.

Switching from Telus. When I called Telus to cancel, they only offered me Internet 50 at the same $50 price.
I almost laughed at the rep when he asked if that was good enough to stay.

What is the wire speed between your router and your modem? It may have negotiated 100Mbps instead of 1Gbps or is capped out a 100Mbps.
You should be able to see the link speed on the status page of your router.

Ya, you can see it in your network properties as well. You should be able to force it to 1Gbps in the nic settings.

Older low grade cabling will also cause problems as those will not be capable of 1Gbps throughput as will your NIC itself.

I had an issue with the HDMI signal on one of my gateway control boxes.
Called Shaw support to get it replaced and the rep moved me from 25mpbs to 150mbps for the same monthly cost so that's a win.
Problem is I am getting 178mpbs down wired to the router but only getting around 60mbps down through my wireless so now I have to decide if it is worth it to find the issue with this router or just buy an upgrade.
Currently running a D-Link 850L, tried calling their support but got a "this number is offline" message so that's not promising.

Can't understand the benefit of bridging and buying a separate router when the shaw one seems to work. Maybe I'm missing something.

You could also probably add a wireless extender to boost speeds further away from the modem.

Some routers have more advanced security or monitoring features. For 90% of users the shaw hardware is fine, some users just like more control.

So Telus is coming tomorrow to switch me from copper to fiber. How are they going to do this in an older house? I won't accept wires on my walls or along my baseboards. Or am I confusing the process?

Also they're now gonna put my internet up to 150 Mbps which I didn't think Telus was able to do. Even the guy I talked to the other day told me the best they could do was 100 in my area so don't know if this girl knows what she's talking about but I will wait and see.

If you live in a small apartment, Shaw's built in access point is probably fine. But in most homes, you'll definitely sacrifice performance in certain areas. If you're paying $1000/year for fast internet, it makes sense to invest in good network equipment in your home as well.

So I switched over to the 150 plan for Shaw but curious why I'm getting different speed test results?
I did a speed test on speedest.shaw.ca and I'm getting 174.70 mbps download, 16.27 mbps upload and 14ms ping.
30 seconds later I did a speed test on Speedtest.net and I'm getting 47.05 mbps download, 16.24 mbps upload and 15ms ping.
What could be causing the HUGE discrepancy in download speed test results?
