Know what else has 'regressed' this year?
The number of Bob Hartley hilarious one liners.
I think that's the real source of the team's funk this year.

Should have started a bunch of goons on the first shift in Columbus to infuriate Torts again!

His one liners are a lot less funny when he is doing such a terrible job.

He's like I was with Brent, basically frothing at the mouth.
Some key differences though.
Bob's got an Adams and won a playoff series.

People will always use the Jack Adams award to deflect criticism from Hartley. Lets be honest here, he's right back to where he was originally when he coached a team with expectations. Underperforming.

Yeah, I still think those expectations were BS though. We snuck into the playoffs thanks to a weak pacific division, and beat a team that was nothing more than first round fodder (thus making us 2nd round fodder). The "expectations" on the team this year were the same stupid expectations put on this team when it was too old/not good enough to compete. The only difference right now? We're young/not good enough to compete.
We should be trying to build a team that mimics Chicago and LA, not the Calgary Flames of 07/08. To do this, patience is required, as championship teams are not built overnight.
I'm not a huge fan of Hartley. I don't think he coaches a modern possession based game of hockey, but this team's roster and coaching has dictated our position in the standings, not coaching alone.

Kind of like how Gio had a good 40 or so games last season and now he's back to where he was before.
When does Giordano's leadership start to come into question? Last year's team didn't even need him to make the playoffs or win a round.

I don't think everyone expected we were a guaranteed playoff team, I know I didn't. However, I don't think it's unrealistic to expect the same level of play, even if it doesn't garner the same results. I don't think we're seeing that at all this year. Teams have learned what to do against us and the coaching hasn't adapted at all. Still always looking to stretch pass and still bombing away at the point way into shinpads way too much.
And yes, it's not all coaching, that's for sure.

They may not have needed him on the ice, but that doesn't mean he wasn't around the team.

what has he or the team done to make you question it?

It seems the media has altered the way they ask questions just like other coaches have altered the way they play the Flames. We're getting less Flames wins and less Hartley quotes.

Just not following your logic. Team is bad -> blame captain? I naively hoped this line of thinking died with the end of the Iginla era. Your first line of thought for a struggling team is "must be the captain's fault!" I don't even know how you'd go there. There are about 100 more significant factors.

when Jones or Ferland are on your first line its pretty hard to blame the coach...not to mention the starting goal tenders. Team has some massive holes

It was mostly in jest, and a lot of it does stem from Iginla being blamed for all of the team's inadequacies.
Look, the special teams are just anemic. I'm not opposed to the Flames cleaning house on the coaching staff at this point. It's going to cost them a shot at the playoffs if they don't change anything. Treliving won't be able to unload any of the roster junk, so this has to be looked at as an option.

The power play sucks in large part because Monahan hasn't been able to win draws when he has to. Fix that and everything else will fall into line.
The PK sucks because the goalies, at their best, are league average. And they're not always at their best. Losing Bouma has been detrimental as well.
There's too much money tied up in the bottom 3 defensemen, the only veteran forwards carrying their weight with consistency are Frolik and Stajan.
There are some fundamental issues with team construction.
Coaching, like Sam Bennett, are the least of my worries.

Ferland was on that line probably the same reason when the Hawks/Quenville had Bryan Bickell play on the top line a few years ago.

Give him a better team I bet he gets better results. They have also had key injuries on the top 6. I think this season the Flames are playing out the string but once they get some key players in place I bet we see a different team. I am not worried I think this is a bump in the road, a part of the rebuild.
