I don't mind Canyon but that synth is just awful. I liked how simple and sincere Liscano's delivery was.

Yeah, I kind of agree... maybe I don't know a lot about Western heritage (if any) in Calgary, but Stampede and the Saddledome are kind of iconic that its now part of the image in Calgary, and I think its great! And to have George Canyon there, I think, really gives Calgary a pretty unique and cool image... for those that don't like it, its just a few minutes... don't see the big deal, I don't think (not sure how it would) hurt people's experience or enjoyments of the game.

I don't get statements like this... If I care and have a great interest in the singing of national anthems at games, so much so that I follow other anthem singers from other teams.... then why shouldn't i care about who sings for the Flames. If it's not a big deal for you then thats perfectly ok, but allow me the same respect

Not a fan. It has too much country drawwwwwl to it for my taste. I figure it probably appeals more to the YEAH AMERICA crowd, but I really like Chicago's. Gives chills.

I'm almost morbidly curious as to how someone becomes an anthem singer "fan" and starts "following" anthem singers around the league.

I think it's probably fair to say that while you don't "get" why people might think anthem singers aren't a big deal, you should understand that most people wouldn't "get" why someone might follow anthem singers.

ok... I guess I didn't realize there were people who followed national anthem singers so closely. I always thought it was a side thing. My apologies.

Any news on whether Canyon will be continuing on in 2015-2016? I remember reading somewhere, can't recall where, that he would only be there for the one season. No disrespect intended, but I hope we get someone new.

I thought George was great, and really captured the symbolism of the city without being overtly corny and stereotypical. I felt his renditions were rather haunting.

That said, from what I understand he will not be returning next year as he is planning to resume touring. Not sure if that has changed.

Did Heather Liscano's career take off? If not, I'd like to see her back with the Flames.

David Blaine could do a less boring rendition of the national anthem than this guy

Pretty sure she was taking a break to focus on her singing career.

Edit: According to an article, she 'retired' to focus on motherhood, singing/songwriting and becoming an entrepreneur. Things can always change though, she's not actually retired from work.

Seems like it was both

"CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames announced today that longtime serving anthem singer Heather Liscano recently approached the team about leaving her role in order to focus more time on motherhood as well as songwriting and entrepreneurial opportunities."

When she was interviewed on 960, she said it was in fact a family based decision, and I believe she also said it was starting to become a bit of a chore. So she felt it was time to let someone else take it.

Hated his anthem style, especially coupled with that lame midi synth which was only necessary because his voice isn't strong enough to carry the anthem by itself. Really hope they can find someone with a powerful enough voice where no background is needed

I was surprised they didn't get a sponsorship from Casio AA Battery powered keyboards for the anthem last season. It was so incredibly tacky. But then again, bringing in a Country Music Singer as your anthem singer to pander to a stereotype is tacky by default.

Maybe next season they will get the Cotton Eyed Joe guy, and he can sing that horrible song instead, and then everyone who enjoys it can wave their truck nutz in the air, while wearing their Jack Daniels cowboy hat, and black wrangler bull riding shirt, because they are a hardcore bull rider that lives in Douglasdale.

I was hoping this thread had been bumped because he had been replaced... Can't stand the anthem the way he sings it.

Agree that the synth sounded weird.

A Banjo would have been better....
