I prefer this perspective; we now hear so much more instant news it is kinda understandable why people think the world is going to poop right now

Yes, but are we not always one (or two) pushes of a button away regardless?

Technically there's no difference. Philosophically, at least until recently, we were probably farther than we ever were since the 50's.

OMG, I just looked up what is involved in female genital mutilation. It is GD sick. These people are fataing barbarians. As an aside, I also don't understand male genital mutilation and can't believe circumcisions are legal and am even more shocked people in Calgary in this day and age opt to cut the protective foreskin off their baby boys' penises, but that's probably a topic for another thread.

At least in those days, the cold war days, you knew you were dealing with rational people on the other side of the phone. Both sides had too much to lose if things threatened to go over the top and you had a diplomatic element to control it. Even at its worst which was the Cuban Missile crisis when the nuclear doomsday clock was set to 5 seconds to midnight you had diplomacy happening in the background.

Now days, we're dealing with extreme death cults, there is no diplomacy, the mark of success is unrepentant slaughter and extremism.

the world is far more unpredictable today.

I'd rather have the unpredictable civility of nationstate diplomacy thanks.

Yeah, but extreme death cults don't have submarine based nukes and ICBM's. I'll take this over the cold war.

That's a strange way to frame it. Those governments are relatively stable and their officially opposing religions aren't driving this conflict. This is not some kind of cold war proxy war between the two countries. This is bad economically and politically for everyone. This is about sectarian conflicts in the Levant (regions like Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, etc.) due to instability and historic grievances between families, tribes, sects, and driven to bloodthirsty zeal by religious rhetoric. Some of this stuff has been going on for decades.

Watch this and you get a feeling of how those historic tensions cause neighbours to kill their neighbours and how the cycle just feeds on mistrust and hate. It really is a sectarian ethnic cleanse going on with each side committing more atrocities in revenge for things the other side has done and it goes on and on until eventually one group takes control.

It's not a strange way to frame it, because support is likely going to either side from those two states.

I have seen quite a few sources online claiming that the FGM fatwa is a hoax.

http://thinkprogress.org/world/2014/...ation-in-iraq/

It certainly sounds very extreme and I can't imagine it happening so I really do hope it is just a hoax.

they seem to be able to kill in numbers without them just fine without them. And this isn't a shot at anyone here, but the reason why we feel that the world is more stable is that the threat is a lot less to us personally, I'm sure that people in the Middle East and Africa and Eastern Europe feel that things are a lot less safe then they were 20 years ago.

It does look like the FGM was false.

However ISIS has pretty well chased every Christian out with threats of forced conversion or brutal death

I would also argue that ISIS has picked up a lot of heavy weapons that were left behind by Iraqi troops including tanks and helicopters and artillary pieces, and seem to have either had or recruited the people needed to operate them.

Its fairly fortunate that Iraq doesn't have chemical weapons in the fight, or long range cruise missiles or air force assets. Because with the way that they're recruiting how hard would it be to find a missile technician, or someone that's trained in the field of pesticides or worse to bolster their cause?

Its something that needs to be thought about, especially if ISIS spreads further into Syria for example who seem to leave all kinds of stuff laying around.

It takes a brave man to advocate for another to go and get killed.

If there was a time machine and I could go back to any day in history, the day I would choose would be July 23, 2014. This is pretty much the safest the world has ever been.

Oh give me a break.

Guess citizens who haven't served have zero right to say which causes they do or don't support their government dedicating troops to? Next time the US tries to drag us into an Iraq-like war we should all just shut up hey? We're not going over there so what say do we have?

Jesus.
